MISSOURI VALLEY -- The Harlan Community softball team made it a double-feature Thursday against the Western Iowa Conference last week, beating Underwood 5-3 in an afternoon home game before winning a 7-0 night game at Missouri Valley.

HCHS improved to 3-0 with the victories going into Tuesday night's game at Carroll. The Cyclones will play at Sioux City Heelan Wednesday (JV-varsity at 4:00), then host Shenandoah for a varsity doubleheader Thursday.

"We're off to a good start. We're hitting the ball well," said HCHS head coach Lisa Connell.

The Cyclones also got solid pitching from Brooke Schaben on Thursday. The sophomore ace allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out 20 in a combined 14 innings. She pitched a four-hitter versus Underwood and a one-hit shutout at Missouri Valley.

At the plate, HCHS totaled eight hits in both games.

The Cyclones were locked in a tight one with Underwood before Malissa Andersen's two-run double in the fourth inning put them ahead to stay. Andersen and Leah Miller both finished with two hits and two RBI.

HCHS showed off some power against the Lady Reds as Brittany Bogler led off the game with her first career over-the-fence home run and Chelsea Cave added a three-run shot in the seventh for her second long ball of the young season. Schaben was 2-for-4 with a double and Andersen added another double as well.
