The 10 best movies of 2003

The past year has been a rather typical, yet still-interesting one in the realm of Hollywood. 2003 has seen the usual preponderance of horrible movies desperately thrown at potential moviegoers in hopes of reeling in an audience.

And through all of this confusion, you are expected to sift through the heap of garbage in hopes of finding a few films that reinforce your personal enjoyment of cinema.
Unfortunately, this year saw many movies that were rooted in good intentions, but turned out to be nothing more than rubbish. It wouldn't be nice to point fingers, but "The Matrix: Reloaded" is probably the best (or worst) example here.
But once in a while, a truly enjoyable film does come along. So amidst all of the deception and disorder, I have compiled a list of my top 10 favorites for this year. They are:
      1. The Last Samurai: This film offers a breath of cultural fresh air that delivers gracefully-developed characters, beautiful cinematography, and some wonderfully-choreographed sword fights.
      2. Open Range: Kevin Costner proves that the American western isn't nearly dead. In fact, "Open Range" has a profound tale of friendship of rare magnitude to tell.
      3. Mystic River: Clint Eastwood's deep - and definitely dark - thriller is absolutely compelling with its well-chosen cast of characters.
      4. Seabiscuit: A heartwarming horse story that's actually not preoccupied with the horse itself. An excellent cast is this movie's driving force.
      5. Millennium Actress: Detailed artwork and a meaningful use of flashbacks make this an intelligent anime film - and an excellent example of creative storytelling.
      6. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King: This epic fantasy wraps up what is possibly the best trilogy created since the original "Star Wars" movies.
      7. Secondhand Lions: The antics of Robert Duvall and Michael Caine's characters are hilarious in this good-natured family film.
      8. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl: If not for anything else, this movie should be seen for the astounding performance of Johnny Depp as the renegade pirate Jack Sparrow.
      9. Matchstick Men: Director Ridley Scott's creative and witty film about two less-than-normal con artists is highly enjoyable.
      10. Finding Nemo: Pixar never fails to bring quality films to the screen, and this year is no exception. "Finding Nemo" is perhaps their best to date and can easily be enjoyed by both children and adults.
