An aquarium, a yellow submarine, the cast of 'Finding Nemo' and all of the fall sports teams and the cast of this fall's junior play " 'Lil Abner" as well as the award-winning Avon Grove High School Marching Band and the West Grove Fire Company all marched in this year's parade which was limited to the area of the high school and the middle school for the first time.
Grand marshall of this year's parade was chairman of the AGHS Social Studies Department, Eric Schott.
Members of the homecoming court, including the King and Queen, drove through on vintage automobiles. Senior king and queen were Josh Belford and Holly Samuel, junior king and queen were Ben Brede and Cassie Byers, sophomores were Kyle Johnson and Rachel Rush and freshmen were Tom Burns and Jodi Hammond.
Opening ceremonies were held at the field after all the parade floats arrived. New principal Tom Alexander served as master of ceremonies and opened the event. He was excited and gratified by the overwhelming turnout by not only the student body but the community at large at this year's homecoming.
The AGHS chorus led by teacher Barbara Vanderkraats sang a humorous version of Disney's "Under the Sea".
The ceremony concluded with a spirited performance of "Distorted" by the Marching band led by drum majors Samantha Glass and Adam Lowe.
The chorus opened the football game with their rendition of the "Star-Spangled Banner".
From the opening kickoff it was clear the Avon Grove football team was not going to repeat the nail-biting performance of last year against Harriton. The Red Devils dominated the field from the start, keeping the crowd on its feet and shutting out Harriton 43-0 in a hard-hitting grid iron match up.
There were a plethora of booths, games and food, food, food of every kind each sponsored by a different club or team raising money for everything from AGYEA to Avon Grove baseball. One popular spot, albeit a wet one, was the dunk tank. Various faculty members such as assistant principal Dr. Kevin King and instructors Mr. Glover and Ms. Jessica Dubb were very good sports and let the students get out a little aggression at their expense. All in good, clean fun.
Everyone involved clearly rose to the occasion to create one of the best homecomings in recent memory.
