Four local athletes were among those earning all-state honors last week in the 2009 Iowa state track and field championships held at Drake Stadium. The event ran May 21-23 in Des Moines. Both Sibley-Ocheyedan and Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn competed in Class 2A.

S-O's Sam Meinders captured the best finish, placing in a tie for sixth place in the high jump. He cleared 6' 4", two inches behind the winner.
Kim Jacobsma also brought home some hardware for S-O. Her best effort, a personal best of 38' 2.5", was good for seventh place in the shot put competition. She finished two feet, nine inches behind the winner.
The Hawks' Justin Wohlert took seventh place in the long jump with a leap of 20' 6.5". The winner posted a jump of 22' 2.25".
Trevor Van Tilburg brought home the Generals' other place finish. The senior was eighth in the discus competition. His best throw of the meet was 148' 3".
The toughest luck went to the H-M-S 4x100 relay, which finished ninth in the preliminaries. Danica Snyder, Stef Heitritter, Sarah Ney and Aubrie Rozeboom combined for a time of :51.35. They missed the finals by a mere 0.15 seconds.
Nichole Duncan also had tough finish in the 800 meters. She placed 10th with a time of 2:22.54, just four-tenths of a second out of eighth place.
Each school turned in a 13th place finish in a pair of relays. S-O's shuttle hurdle relay team, Kally Iedema, Shelby Stofferan, Tena Jeppesen and Augusta Wiese turned in a time of 1:10.97. Iedema is the only senior in the group. Snyder, Heitritter, Ney and Rozeboom combined for a time of 1:48.97 in the 4x200 relay.
Marcus Treimer, H-M-S, was 14th in the long jump with a leap of 19' 7.5". Also 14th was the Generals' 4x800 relay, which Katie Hansen, Jordan Truckenmiller, Brandi Newman and Danelle Miedema ran in 10:07.38.
Three entries finished 15th in their respective events. Duncan, H-M-S, ran the 1500 meters in 5:05.41; Dillon Sweeney, H-M-S, 400 meters, :52.63; and the S-O boys' quartet, Patrick Alexander, Paul Davids, Greg Iedema and Derek Ackerman, the 4x200 in 1:33.91.
A pair of H-M-S athletes finished 17th in their events. Josh Noble heaved the shot 46' 0.75" and Ney ran the 100 meter prelims in :13.09. She missed the finals by 0.19 seconds.
