Funeral services for Marvin O. Brockshus, 89, were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 10, at St. John's Lutheran Church, May City, with Rev. Paul Johnson officiating. Interment was in Harrison Township Cemetery, May City, with Hartley Funeral Home, Hartley, in charge of arrangements. He died November 6, 2009.
Marvin Otto Brockshus the son of Henry and Dorthea (Boernsen) Brockshus was born on February 16, 1920 on the family farm near Ocheyedan. He attended school at St. John's Lutheran Parochial School as well as county school. While growing up Marvin was active in 4-H and loved Rural Youth. On February 18, 1951 he married Alice Newquist at St. John's Lutheran Church in May City. Together the couple were engaged in farming for 34 years west of May City. Before retiring, he spent several years farming in partnership with his son, Allen. Marvin sold seed corn and was a member of the Hereford Cattle Association for many years. Marvin was a lifetime member of St. John's Lutheran Church of May City, where he taught a youth Bible class and held many positions on the Voters Assembly. He was an active member in the Walther League and Layman Leagues. In addition he enjoyed many days at Camp Okoboji working to improve camp facilities. He is survived by his wife, Alice; two sons: Allen Brockshus, his wife, Penny, and step grandson, Austin Folson of Spirit Lake; and Larry Brockshus and his wife, Nancy, of Burnsville, Minn.; grandchildren: Beth Brockshus of Papillion, Nebr. and Adam Brockshus and his wife, Kristin, and their children, Loren and Nathan of North Las Vegas, Nev.; one brother, Herbert Brockshus and his wife, Marlene, of Ocheyedan; two sisters: Meta Groff and her husband, Albert, of Hartley; and Erna Kooistra of Sheldon; three sisters-in-law: Marge Brockshus of Ocheyedan; Doris Haeckman and her husband, Duane, of Ellsworth, Minn.; and Inez Smith of Sanborn. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Dorthea; son, Robert and brothers, John and Vernon.
