      Funeral services for Daniel Constant Ostermann, 83, were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, October 31, at Grace Lutheran Church, Spirit Lake, Iowa, with Rev. Charles Gilbert officiating. Interment in Lakeview Gardens, Spirit Lake, with Turner Funeral Homes & Crematory, Spirit Lake, in charge of arrangements. He died October 27, 2009.


      Daniel Constant Ostermann was born November 18, 1925, the son of Gus and Redina (Bremer) Ostermann. He attended schools in the Ocheyedan area and in 1942, at the age of 16, went to Alaska with his father and two brothers. His father was one of the Iowa grading contractors hired for the Alcan Highway project. In 1944 Dan enlisted in the Navy, returning to Ocheyedan to complete his high school degree. He joined the family company of Gus Ostermann and Sons Inc., road builders. This company became Dan Ostermann Inc. in 1966. He retired in 1992.
      In 1948 he married Harriet Cunningham of Worthington, Minn. They had three children, Constance (David) Parker of Shawnee, Kan.; Rhoda Ostermann (deceased); Bruce (Barbara) Ostermann of Worland, Wyo.; and two step-grandsons, Carla and Alec Hampton, Worland, Wyo.
      He was a pilot, photographer and environmentalist, having been chosen as Conservation Farmer of the Year for Osceola County. He supported many sportsman organizations, including being a lifetime member of Ducks Unlimited and the National Rifle Association.
