Four Britton-Hecla juniors will be attending Boys and Girls State in June. Michael Blegen and Dillon Bohlander will attend the 67th Annual Boys State June 1-6 at Northern State University in Aberdeen. Kirsten Hastings and Hillarey Holland were selected as Girls State delegates and will attend from 60th annual session from June 1-6 at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. Back in the depression-ridden days of the early 1930's, the American Legion grew concerned over public statements to the effect that democracy was "on the skids." How, it wondered, could America train its young people in the processes of self government as effectively as Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany seemed to be training their youth in the totalitarian forms of government. Deciding that the best way to learn was by practicing it, the American Legion started Boys State and a few years later the Legion Auxiliary began Girls State. About 500 attendees at each session will become part of the operation of local, county, and state government. They will be exposed to the rights and privileges and duties and responsibilities of a citizen. Blegan is the son of Terry and Wendy Blegen of Britton and is a 'B' honor roll student. He has been active in his church youth group, food pantry, soccer coach, Fort Sisseton melodrama, and spent two years in 4-H. School activities include cross country, track, swim team, jazz choir, and All-State Chorus. This summer he will travel with the Midwest Music Ambassadors to Europe and with his youth group to New Orleans. Bohlander is an 'A' honor roll student and the son of Julie Symens and Alan Bohlander. He has participated in 4-H, church youth group, basketball, football, and baseball. He has served as president of his 4-H group and vice-president of the 4-H Junior Leaders. Bohlander attend the 4-H National Congress in Atlanta, GA, and the Americanism Conference in Valley Forge, PA. Hastings is a 4.0 student and the daughter of Bob and Sandy Hastings of Britton. Her community involvement includes her church youth group, church choir, 4-H, and some recycling for church and school. She also participates in gymnastics, cheerleading, jazz choir, and was a member of All-State Chorus. Hastings will travel to Europe with the Midwest Music Ambassadors this summer. Holland is also a 4.0 student and the daughter of Keith Holland and Lisa and Troy Dahme. She is a member of her church youth group, a Sunday School teacher, and coached youth soccer. School activities have included cross country, yearbook, choir, basketball, volleyball, and track, and she is the Junior Class president. She has also exhibited artwork at the Granary competition.
