A program has been announced that would allow agricultural producers to voluntarily enroll farmland that would help wildlife, improve surface water quality, and control soil erosion. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Commodity Credit Corporation, and the State of South Dakota put together the James River Watershed Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (JRW CREP) that is administered by the Farm Service Agency (FSA). Participating producers would receive annual rental payments and cost share incentives to establish approved conservation practices on enrolled lands. The state would also provide a 40 percent increase in base average CRP rental rates. All enrolled land would be open to the public for recreational hunting and fishing. FSA is accepting comments on the program until March 3. For more information go to http://public.geomarine.com or call the Aberdeen GFP office at 605-626-2391.
