Members of the Dakota Hot Shots, a precision air rifle and smallbore team, competed in collegiate matches at the University of Mississippi and the University of Memphis recently. Representing South Dakota were Raymond Freeman and Paige Gaikowski of Britton and Cheyenne Arbach of Marion. In Oxford, Mississippi, the team competed in both precision air rifle and smallbore. The air rifle match consists of 60 shots in the standing position and the smallbore match includes 20 shots in prone position, 20 shots standing, and 20 shots kneeling. In air rifle, all three team members placed in the top 15 among non-collegiate competitors. Freeman and Arbach each shot a score of 555/600 and Gaikowski hit 527/600. In smallbore, Arbach fired a 524, Freeman a 517, and Gaikowski a 482. It was the first smallbore match for Gaikowski with a new rifle that she had for only three days prior to the competition. At the University of Memphis, Arbach led the Dakota Hot Shots in the air rifle match with a 562 and placed fourth in the non-collegiate division. Freeman was sixth with a 546, and Gaikowski was seventh at 542. The next competition will be at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO, for the Winter Air Gun Championship, which is three days of air rifle matches and is a selection match for the National Junior Development Team. The top two junior competitors at this match, plus two other upcoming national matches, will earn spots on the National Junior Team and compete in the Championships of the Americas and the World Championships in Munich, Germany. The Hot Shots are coached by Bryon Hahn of Humboldt and Dempster Christianson of Sioux Falls.
