Langford Set To Tee Off
April 18, 2007

Langford is scheduled to begin its third season of golf at the school this week - finally.
Pastor Charlie Bunk assumed the coaching reins this spring when Levi Tvedt moved out of the district, but the start of the season has been a long time in coming thanks to a lack of cooperation from Mother Nature. Langford has had its first five meets of the season either postponed or cancelled due to poor weather conditions.
The local golfers are scheduled to finally tee it up at Faulkton on Thursday, and then just three and a half weeks later will compete in the regional tournament in Watertown.
The pace will be hectic the next several weeks with postponed meets rescheduled amongst the regular schedule. Bunk's crew travels to Groton on Monday and then plays a stretch of four meets in just eight days.
"The next few weeks we'll just be trying to have everybody get a lot of swing in, and to be smart about those swings," said Bunk. "We're working on our nine, seven, five, and three irons to get an idea of how we hit those clubs and get a little smarter on club selection."
Bunk said the opener at Faulkton will be a good first test for his squad.
"That first time out our goal is to just play within our character and not to try to swing for the fences," said the Lions' boss. "We want to play a calm, even game. Faulkton will also be the site for the Lake Region Conference Tournament, so it will be good for us to get on the course and get some experience."
Langford had 15 boys report for the squad this season with a solid group of returnees, but just one girl.
Stephen Fagerland, Mitch Williams, Drew and Patrick Pierson, and Jared Darling will compete on the varsity squad in Thursday's opener. Brittney Traxinger is the lone member of the girls' team.
Bunk is anxious to see his charges in action on the golf course.
"We've been hitting around Langford on the football field for a week and a half, and we had a chance to get to the driving range in Britton before it snowed," said Bunk. "Monday was the first time we were able to get out on the course in Britton, so it will be good just to get out on the golf course."
