**CECIL PHILLIPS
      The funeral for Cecil D. Phillips, 85 Sisseton, a  longtime Rutland, ND area resident, was held today, Wednesday,  November 25 at the Nordland Lutheran Church of Rutland.   Pastors Justin Fenger and George Affeldt officiated.  Burial was in the Rutland Cemetery under the direction of the Price Funeral  Chapel of Forman, ND.
      He died Saturday, November 21, 2009, at Tekakwitha  Living Center in Sisseton.
      Cecil Donald Phillips was born April 5, 1924 in North Vernon, IN to  Arlie and Belle (Tungeitt) Phillips.  He grew up and attended school  there, graduating from North Vernon High School in 1942.  He served in  the U. S. Navy from 1944 to 1946.
      On November 30, 1946 he married Dorothy Maxine Kraig at Forman, ND.   They made their home in the Rutland area where Cecil worked as a  farmer.  He also worked for a short time as a policeman in Fargo  before returning to work as a farmer.  In the mid 1950's, Cecil  obtained an elementary teaching certificate from Ellendale Teacher's  College.  He taught school in rural country schools in western North  Dakota.  He later was a principal and/or taught in various schools in  the Sargent Central School District including Brampton, Forman, Cayuga  and Rutland.  In 1970 he received his Bachelor degree from the  University of North Dakota and a Master degree the following year.  After leaving Sargent Central, he taught several years in various  schools in Arizona and South Dakota. At the time of his retirement in  1987, he had been in education for a total of 30 years.  In addition  to his teaching and farming, Cecil also worked as a Federal Crop  adjuster for a number of years.  Following his retirement, he and  Dorothy made their home in Rutland until moving to Sisseton in July of  2007, to be near their son.
      Cecil enjoyed baking, especially pies and pineapple upside down  cakes.
      Survivors include; his wife of Sisseton; his son, Arlie (Ryllis) Phillips, Sisseton; a sister, Arlene (Robert) Peck and brother, Arlie  (Janice) Phillips, both of North Vernon, IN.
      He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter and an  infant son.

**DAVID (SPUTZ) CHRISTENSEN
      The funeral for David "Sputz" Christensen, 55, was held today, Wednesday, November 25 at 3 p.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church of  Britton, with Rev. Chris Prumm officiating. Music for the funeral was provided by Mary Zuehlke, organist and  Terry Price, soloist. 
      Burial was in  Pleasant Valley Cemetery, rural Kidder. Price Funeral Chapel of  Britton, was in charge of arrangements.
      Casketbearers were Jeff Amacher, Don Cusick,  Adrian Heitmann, Maynard Bosse, David Deutsch and Ralph Skare.   Honorary casketbearers were all of his many friends.
      He died Sunday, November 22, 2009, at Sanford Health Care  Center in Sioux Falls.
      David Lee Christensen was born December 22, 1953 at Britton to  Roland M. and Donna M. (Smith) Christensen.  He attended grade school  at Kidder and Havana, ND.  He graduated from Britton High School  in 1973.
      After completing his education, Sputz worked for area farmers for a  number of years, including Ray Jarrett and Jim Miles.  He later worked  at Horton, Inc. and for Buhl's of Britton.  Lately, Sputz could be  found early every morning delivering the Aberdeen American News to  many of the homes in Britton.
      Sputz had been a member of Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church of Kidder  and more recently, a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Britton.   He enjoyed bowling.  Perhaps his favorite pastime of all was just  taking the time to visit with a friend, and share his kind, warm and  friendly personality.  Sputz was always willing to lend a helping hand  to anyone in need.
      Survivors include; his mother of Britton; two brothers: Keith (Darla) Christensen, Elbow Lake, MN;  Steven (Wanda) Smith, Maplewood, MN; and a number of nieces and  nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents,  and his father.

**LORETTA OPSAHL
      Loretta Opsahl, 80, Silverton, OR and formally of Roslyn died Thursday, November 12, 2009 at Mt. Angel Towers in Mt. Angel, OR.
      Funeral services were held Saturday, November 21 at Fiksdal Funeral Chapel in Webster, Burial was at Fron Lutheran Cemetery near Roslyn.
      Loretta Amundson was born Monday, June 17, 1929 to Ludvig and Hannah (Johnson) Amundson at Roslyn.  She was baptized and confirmed at Fron Lutheran Church.  She attended country school near her home and graduated from Roslyn High School in 1947.  Following graduation she attended Northern Normal in Aberdeen and received her teaching certificate.  She taught country school in Liberty Township, Day County for a year.
      On August 28, 1949 she was united in marriage to E. Clifford Opsahl at Fron Lutheran Church.  After their marriage the couple made their home in Roslyn where they operated the Roslyn Café and Roslyn Meat Market for a year.  Later they moved to Britton where she worked at Quarve Drug.  In 1952 they moved to Long Beach, CA.  In 1975 they moved to Silverton, OR. Clifford died in March 2002.
      Survivors include her grandson, Jeffrey Opsahl, Salem, OR; a brother, Gordon Amundson, Langford; a brother-in-law, Orris Fishbeck, Webster.
      She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son and a sister.


**EVERETT WURST
      Everett W. Wurst, 79, Rockledge, FL, died Friday, November 20, 2009 at Hospice Care Center of Wuesthoff Hopsital.
      Everett Wurst was born June 26, 1930 to Frank and Ethel (Smith) Wurst south of Britton. He graduated from Kidder High School. He later enlisted in the US Army. He was a veteran of the Korean War where he was trained as a paratroop and served in Korea and Japan.
      Following his discharge he married Elura Junker of Amherst. They had two children, Royce Lynn and Patricia Lee. Everett worked as a mechanical technician for Cessna and Douglas Aircraft Companies for about twenty years. Everett and Elura were divorced in 1974 and he moved to Colorado.
      He married Arleen White in February 1976 in Golden, CO. Arleen died in March of 1996. He moved to Glen Rock, WY and later moved to Rockledge, FL.
      Survivors include his daughter, Patricia Beverage, Rockledge; two grandsons; one great-granddaughter; sister-in-law, Margaret Wurst; three step-children, Daniel, Patricia and Diane and four step-grandchildren.
      He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, a son and his wife.
      He will be buried in Grand Junction, CO at a later date.


**JOHN A. HOGLUND
      The funeral for John A. Hoglund, 84, Langford, will be Saturday, November 28 at 1 p.m. at the Assembly of God Church in Sisseton.  Pastors Vern Donnell and Bob Beasley will officiate.  Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, rural Langford.
      Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday at the Price Funeral Chapel, Britton with a 7 p.m. prayer service.
      He died November 23, 2009, at the Marshall County Healthcare Hospital.
      John Albert Hoglund was born June 28, 1925, in Marshall County, South Dakota, to Gust and Esther Hoglund. He joined the Army and at the end of World War II was stationed in Germany. 
      John met Shirley Bailey in Britton.  They both attended North Central Bible Institute in Minneapolis, MN.  They were later united in marriage October 8, 1949, at Sauk Centre, Minnesota.  They first lived in Little Sauk, MN and then moved to Langford in 1952 where they farmed until their retirement.  They had six children. 
     John enjoyed hunting and fishing, a passion he shared with his sons.  He continued to fish even in his later years as a way of relaxation.  When he was raising his family he even trapped muskrats to buy Christmas presents.
     He was a member of the Sisseton Assembly of God Church . 
     Survivors include his children, Glenyce (Victor III) Emigh, Winsted, MN; Laela (Gaylon) Van Zee, Miller, Berton (Christie) Hoglund, Rose Hill, KS, Cindy Hoglund, Sioux Falls, Bryan (Lisa) Hoglund, Haysville, KS, Rick (Ronda) Hoglund, Wahpeton, ND; 15 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; brother Jim (Marge) Hoglund; sisters Rachel (Bob) Marker, Beverly Churchill, Mary Lou Olsen, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Merle (Lorraine) Olson.
    He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, a sister, three brothers-in-law and one infant grandson.
