LAURA I PETERSEN
      Laura I. Petersen, age 100, Watertown, died Thursday, October 1, 2009 at Jenkins Living Center in Watertown. Funeral services were held Monday, October 5, at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Watertown. Reverend Steven Bailey officiated with Bruce Reinhardt as organist and Kathy Alwin as soloist.
      Interment was in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Watertown. Wight, Comes & Sogn Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
      Active pallbearers were Douglas, Bruce and David Card, Andrew Papaleo, Todd Meyer and Randall Daughters.
      Family requests memorials be designated to Jenkins Living Center.
      Laura Isabel Petersen was born on September 7, 1909 to George and Laura (Hof) Faragher in Watertown. She grew up in Watertown.
      Laura was united in marriage to L.C. "Pete" Petersen on January 4, 1930 at Milbank. She was employed at J.C. Penney's for 19 years. She was an active member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, past president of the Women's Fellowship, served on various church boards including chairman of Memorial Committee and chairman of the Deaconate. She helped organize the Association of Retarded Citizens in Watertown and served as its first local president. Laura was a Past Matron of Order of the Eastern Star, past president of Social Afternoon and past president of Past Matrons Club. She was a member of the Senior Citizens and former member of Fortnightly Club.
      Pete died April 6, 1991.
      She loved beach combing, was an avid bridge player and above all, loved her children and grandchildren.
      Laura is survived by her two daughters, Karyl (Charles) Card of Britton, Karen (Kenton) Frohrip of St. Cloud, MN; her brother, Palmer (Bonnie) Faragher, Sylmar, CA; her 9 grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her daughter, Kay Lynn Petersen.

ARVID SUTHER
      The funeral for Arvid J. Suther, 96, was held Tuesday, October 6 at the First Lutheran Church of Britton.  The Reverend Terrill Sorensen officiated. Music for the funeral was provided by Dorothy Christenson, organist.
      Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen, under the direction of the Price Funeral Chapel, Britton.
  Casketbearers were Arvid's grandchildren: Adam Suther, Adrienne Suther, Alex Suther, Austin Suther, Gregg Rasmusson, and Emily Negrin.
      He died Friday, October 2, 2009, at Wheatcrest Hills in Britton.
      Arvid John Suther was born August 8, 1913 on the Suther homestead southeast of Claremont to Ed and Alvilda Pauline (Martinson) Suther.  In 1919 he moved with his family to a farm in Weston Township, where he remained until entering Wheatcrest Hills in May of 2009.
      As a youngster, he attended rural Marshall County schools and graduated from Amherst High School in 1930.  He then helped his father on the family farm until taking over the operation for himself.
      On October 28, 1950, he married Judith Augusta Lindgren.  They made their home on the farm where they raised their family.  Arvid was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Britton.  He had served for many years as the Clerk of the Weston Township Board of Supervisors.  He was a farmer first, foremost, and always.
      Survivors include; his wife of Britton; a son, Wayne (DeeAnn) Suther, Claremont; a daughter, Mary (Dennis) Rasmusson, Battle Lake, MN; a sister, Hazel Suther, Minneapolis; six grandchildren and a great-grandson. 
      He was preceded in death were his parents, an infant brother and three sisters.

DENNIS SWENSON
      The funeral for Dennis Swenson, 84, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 8 at Britton United Methodist Church with Rev. Deb Mack officiating.  Burial will be in the Britton Cemetery.
      Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Price Funeral Chapel of Britton.
      Dennis died Saturday, October 3, 2009, at his farm home. 
      Dennis Dell Swenson was born October 28, 1924 near Hillhead to Stinus E. and Eldeva Kepford (Constantine) Swenson.  He grew up in the Hillhead area and attended rural school in LaBelle Township near Hillhead.
      At the age of 16, Dennis worked on a farm near Lidgerwood, ND for a threshing crew.  As a part of the Civilian Conservation Corps, he helped build the dam at Garretson, ND and also worked on the railroad.  He later worked at a service station in Claremont and eventually went to work for Thorp Ranches northeast of Britton in 1942.
      In 1944, Dennis enlisted in the U.S. Army.  He served as a prison guard at Dachau, Germany and detonated enemy ammunition.  After his discharge from military duty, Dennis returned to the Britton area and worked at Thorp Ranch again.  In 1947 he went to work for Merle Moeckly.
      On December 13, 1947 he married Dalorse Mae Smith at Webster.  They moved to a farm west of Britton where they remained until 1956.  At that time they bought their farm northwest of Britton, where they lived the rest of their lives.  Dalorse died May 11, 2003 and Dennis continued to make his home on the farm.
      Dennis was a member of the Britton United Methodist Church.  He belonged to the Reisenweber-Wolf Post # 298 of the American Legion of Kidder, and Marshall Post #3507 of the V.F.W. of Britton.  He enjoyed farming, but could always find time for camping, boating and picnicking with his family.  Visiting over a cup of coffee with friends was also important to Dennis.  He had a tremendous knack for fixing machinery.  He had recently made a loader tractor out of a 7700 John Deere combine.  Dennis was perhaps most at peace and happiest when he was fishing.  He felt it was always important to have a family dog, and he was often seen in his white pickup with his faithful Golden Retriever, "Goldie" riding in the back.
      Survivors include; his four daughters: Sonia (Leonard) Wolf, Britton; Cheryl Impecoven (Terry Sandve), Britton; Debbie (Kent) Thoelke, Sisseton; Pam (Jeff) Oelkers, Britton; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one brother, Zane (Marian) Swenson, Brandon, and one sister: Ramona Marlow, Watertown.
      He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four brothers and two sisters.

BERNARD "BERNIE" MAHRER
      Bernard "Bernie" Mahrer, 82, Hankinson, ND, died Friday, October 2, 2009 at Triumph Hospital, Fargo, ND due to a cerebral hemorrhage which occurred April 14, 2009.
      Funeral Mass was held Tuesday, October 6 at St. Philip's Catholic Church, Hankinson.
      Burial with military honors by Hankinson American Legion Eberhard Post #88 and the Rutland American Legion Evanson Bergman Post #215 was held at Rutland Cemetery, Rutland, ND. Frank Family Funeral Home in Hankinson, ND, was in charge of arrangements.
      Bernard Mahrer was born May 21, 1927 at home in rural Forman, ND, to Frank and Minnie (Philomena Kulzer) Mahrer. He was raised and attended school there while helping his parents on their dairy farm. He later worked in the shipyards at Bremerton, WA in early World War II and then served in the U.S. Army in the Aleutian Islands.
      Upon his honorable discharge he worked in road construction in the Forman area, and in 1948 he and his parents built and operated a restaurant in Rutland, ND, known as Bernie's Café. Upon selling that in 1955, he began his career in highway construction and later as a sand and aggregate producer. He and his brother, Charles owned and operated several firms together, doing statewide road building in North Dakota and later as aggregate producers in the Hankinson area. This operation was moved near Britton, SD. Since 1973, this has been owned solely by Bernie and became known as Bernard Mahrer Const., Inc. with offices in Rutland, ND.
      Bernie married Shirley Olson of Rutland February 18, 1952. They have resided in Hankinson, ND for 45 years, after living previously in Rutland, Forman and Bismarck. They have spent part of each winter in Fountain Hills, AZ for many years.
      Survivors include; his wife of Hankinson, ND, son Mitchell (Dawn), Rutland, ND, daughter Stephanie (James Graffeo) Fergus Falls, MN; six grandchildren four great grandchildren; a sister: Virginia (Frank) Gathman, Detroit Lakes, MN; sister-in-law: Ellen Mahrer, Bird Island, MN.
      He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, a brother and an infant great grandson.

RICHARD
BAUMBERGER
      Richard H. Baumberger, 80, Great Falls, MT, died Saturday, October 3, 2009 at a local health care facility.
      Cremation has taken place under the direction of Croxford Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorial services with military rites will be held in the Rose Room, Friday, October 9. Burial will be held at later date at Highland Cemetery.
      Richard Baumberger was born June 24, 1929 in McIntosh. He was raised by his uncle and aunt, Johnny and Helen Olson in Britton. He attended Britton schools. He graduated from Beresford high school in 1947. He worked on the Anderson Dam at Tirzcille, WA. He moved to Great Falls in 1949.      
      He was united in marriage to Joyce Blaine, February 4, 1951 in Great Falls. He served in Montana Air National Guard from 1951 until 1956. He was employed as a printer by the Great Falls Tribune for over twenty years.
      Survivors include his wife of Great Falls, and his son, Jay W. (Debbie) Baumberger, Great Falls.
