Knowing what is available and where to go in communities is a tremendous help when seniors are looking for services to help them maintain their lives in their home and community. To provide information on resources to assist seniors in a variety of areas, you are invited to attend the Senior Resource Fair to be held on Wednesday, October 28th. The event will be held at the Aberdeen Convention Center adjacent to the Ramkota Inn located on north highway 281. The event is free to attend and open to the public from 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m..
Local, regional and state public and private agencies representing 68 services will be participating. Services/agencies invited to participate in the event will focus on the areas of housing, nutrition and health care. Providers will be on hand to discuss programs which they sponsor as well as support they are able to provide to limited income residents.
A number of screenings will be offered including blood sugar, glaucoma, solar sensitivity and blood pressure. Too, a cholesterol screening will be offered to the first 100 participants but requires a 12 hour fast. The screenings are provided at no cost by program service providers. Flu shots will be available to those with Medicare (card must be presented) at no cost, and for a fee for those without Medicare. Registrants will also be eligible for a number of door prizes offered by program service providers.
Presentations at the event will include "5 Wishes" at 10 a.m., "Fall Prevention" at noon and a "Medicare Part D Update" at 1 p.m.. The "5 Wishes" presentation will discuss how families may plan ahead to cope with serious illnesses and end of life issues. The panel of speakers including Rob Ronayne, Ronayne & Wein, LLP Attorneys at Law; Kevin Spitzer, Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home; and Barb Suurmeyer, RN, LSW, Avera St. Luke's Hospital. The "Fall Prevention" presentation will be presented by Linda Smith, Healthy Aging Volunteer and staff from Avera St. Luke's Physical & Occupational Department. Items to be discussed include how to adapt your home to reduce hazards to prevent falls and steps you can take to insure a safer environment for yourself and your home. The "Medicare Part D Update" presented by Cooperative Extension Staff, will share information on the upcoming Medicare Part D Open Enrollment which begins November 15th. Each year seniors enrolled in Medicare Part D have the opportunity to review and select the most appropriate policy for the upcoming year. Each year Part D insurance plans can have significant changes in their premiums and which medications they have in their formularies, which in turn can significantly impact the out of pocket expenses for seniors for prescription drugs.
