TEN YEARS AGO 1999 Do B-K students feel safe after the massive Columbine shooting last April? A survey at school showed: "Yes, this is a good community with good people," "I think schools have tightened security since Columbine," "No, because of some of the things I see in the hallways." 1999 Belmond native Matt Gabrielson has been named top Drake male athlete. 1999 Joan Mize of Trinity, Doris Dorr and Adean Dorr of St. Olaf attended the Northeastern Iowa Synodical Women's Organization fall gathering at Postville last week. 1999 Donna Brown was shown at Farmers Market with the pumpkins she had painted. Marian Kinseth was about to make a purchase from her. Brenda Stahl was shown at the market with her homegrown vegetables. TWENTY YEARS AGO 1989 Billie and Mike McNutt have been in the business of removing cobs from farms and hauling them to Omaha for many years. 1989 Spending five weeks in Switzerland this summer was Cathy Buseman, senior. Her host sister, Martina Bereiter, spent much time shopping and sharing different things about their countries. 1989 Last summer, Jeff Rabe, BHS junior, worked from 7:30 to 4 p.m. being a conservationist at Lake Cornelia. 1989 Last week seven Peer Helpers from BHS traveled to Johnston, Iowa, for the Iowa Public Television broadcast of "Student Voices, Student Choices". They were Todd Steenblock, Erin Johnson, Chrystal Schuver, Chris Anderson, Chris Nichols, Shea McLaughlin and John Leist. Chris Nichols asked a question on the show. THIRTY YEARS AGO 1979 Karen Stadtlander was shown with a salad plate which is an option offered to those at the Belmond schools hot lunch program. 1979 In the Independent's Area Pork Producers special edition this month were children of Steve and Sharion Hinman, Michele, 5, and Neal, 8. They proudly held two little pigs from their family herd. 1979 The Independent's Galt Feed and Grain, Inc., ad included pictures and testimonies from the following Belmond and area farmers: Gary Gabrielson, Larry Severson, Lynn and Sue Mennenga, Richard Brooks, Larry Mennenga, Bob V., Mathew and Bob D. Nelson, Melvin McAlpine, Jack and Mary Spitler, Coonie Smith, Mark Nelson, Loren Payne and Lawrence Ziller. 1979 A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at Belmond Junction Tonsorial Parlor Thursday. Proprietors are Sue Thompson and Deb Poncin. FORTY YEARS AGO 1969 Barney Dillon has been a member of the Belmond Fire Department for 58 years, having become a volunteer at the age of 20 in 1912. 1969 The Belmond Jaycees annual Kids Halloween party for kids kindergarten through third grade will be chaired by Gary Ruka and Vernie McLaughlin. A costume contest will be conducted and games and contests are planned. 1969 Jaycee Ettes are conducting this year's annual Belmond Community Chest drive. 1969 Players of the Week chosen after the Broncos 17-0 win over the Lake Mills Bulldogs Friday are Tim Dirks, Jerry Stadtlander, Randy Turner and Joey McLaughlin. FIFTY YEARS AGO 1959 David Thompson's 4th birthday was celebrated Sunday at the Fred Loeffler home. Guests were David's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Don Thompson, the Paul Rogalla family, and the Alex Zeiger family. 1959 Gene Griffin has been promoted to the position of Controller of Tomahawk Corn Co. 1959 A multi-purpose food, a dietary protein concentrate providing a low-cost source of essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals, will be manufactured and marketed by General Mills, Inc. and the BMI soybean processing plant here has been assigned production of the product. SIXTY YEARS AGO 1949 J.R. "Pat" Gallagher of Grinnell will join the staff of the Independent next week, as editor and circulation manager. 1949 Shelled corn (25,000 bushels) under government seal were scattered on the ground when two bins of the elevator at Olaf in Wright county collapsed. Everett Anderson is the manager. The $40,000 structure has a capacity of 225,000 bushels and had not been completed. 1949 Harvesting of the present corn crop was placed on an emergency basis, as some fields were reported down as much as 40 % of the total yield. Belmond high school and junior high students will be dismissed from school in Belmond half days to help in this emergency by picking up corn. Minimum wage will be 60¢ per hour. 1949 The Belmond Flying Club will meet Thursday, according to secretary R.W. Courson. 1949 Dr. and Mrs. Paul Rietz and Julie were Sunday dinner guests at the home of Paul's sister, Nina Heathershaw in Rowan. Other guests were the Karl Rietz family and the Edward Rietz family.
