  Eagle Project of John Redder has been the refinishing and painting of the shuffle boards at the retirement apartments.

  Dwight Suntken of the Belmond FHA exhibited the champion Hereford steer at the Waterloo Dairy Cattle Congress last weekend. Later the same day the same steer was selected Grand Champion Steer of the fair. The Montana born steer weighed 1,220 pounds.

  Explorer Scout Terry Peters was the first place winner in the North Central Region Area Readers Digest Public Speaking Contest held on September 27 in the corporate headquarters of Gambles, the Minneapolis-based merchandising company. He is now eligible to advance to the regional contest in Kansas City in October.

  Work crew under the direction of Clair, Jerry, Don and O'Larry Dorr, put in the circular drive in front of St. Francis Xavier church. The parish hopes to complete the paving of the parking area in the near future.

  An important birthday was celebrated by John Campbell this week - he was 99 years old on Monday.

  Environmentally sound construction is the plan Tyler McNeal has for the home he is building on a farm north of Belmond. His plan calls for power from the two wind mills now in place and heat to be provided from solar units. The house will feature a geodesic dome on top of the base. Tyler estimates that he has undertaken a three-year project.

  Engagement of their daughter Donna Marlene Wessels to David Allen Basener is announced by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Wessels. Parents of the groom are Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Basener. They plan a December wedding.

  Dutch Thompsen and Ed Chapman recently returned from a different fishing expedition. Dutch and Ed both snagged (one 24 and one 22 pound) Chinock Salmons at Lake Michigan.

  Observing National School Hot Lunch Week are the cooks at the high school: Edythe Walrod, Esther Boelman, Doris Greenwood, Dena Pals and Lucy Boelman.

  Fire Friday at Belmond Motors resulted when a gas line on the 1967 Ford Station wagon owned by A.R. Dorr and Sons was cut with a torch while mechanics were working to remove old shock absorbers. There was minor damage to the building where the insulation was scorched; the vehicle was a total loss.

  Alan Tyrrell is a member of the New Mexico Potters Association in Taos, New Mexico, and will demonstrate throwing pots on the wheel at their festival next week. Alan is an apprentice under Willard Spence who has a permanent gallery in Taos.

  BHS Homecoming queen candidates this year are Terri Bloemke, Judy Sears and Peg Wenzel; kind candidates are Randy Dougherty, Matt McClure and Terry Peters.

  Ribbon cutting was held at the Arcade Lounge owned by Harold and Wilma Erdman, Friday.

  Queen Peggy Wenzel and King Matt McClure reigned over the BHS homecoming festivities.

  Hammers are banging, paint brushes are flying, and costumes are being prepared as the BHS Thespians rehearse the fall play, "Time Out For Ginger". The cast includes Kendy McLaughlin, Cary Whitty, Jack Avery, Pam Sharp, Denise McVey, Marlene Triggs, Mary Aldrich, Terry Greenfield, Scott Wilson, and Ed McNulty.

  Don Lancaster and Dan Middleton will model for Thompsen Clothing and Haberdashery at Christian Women's Club meeting next week.
