Playoff bound St. Ansgar dealt Belmond-Klemme a 20-0 setback in the regular season finale last Friday night at Nelson Stadium and Faris Field in Belmond.
The first series set the tone for things to come. Three plays into B-K's first possession, St. Ansgar returned an intercepted pass to the Bronco 47 yard line. Nine plays later, the Saints capitalized on a four-yard touchdown rush by Jacob Dalluge. The extra point try was blocked.
Neither team mounted a sustained drive for the balance of the first quarter and much of the second period. What would be B-K's best chance to score came late in the second quarter as they drove from their own 45 yard line to the Saint 10; but a critical penalty would result in the Broncos being stopped five yards shy of the sticks as time expired and St. Ansgar ahead 6-0.
It appeared to be instant replay as the third quarter began. Three plays into B-K's first series, the Saints returned an intercepted pass to the Bronco 10 yard line. Three plays later, St. Ansgar cashed in on a one-yard touchdown dive by Cody Marsh. Garrett Ehlke tacked on the extra point to increase the Saint lead to 13-0 entering the fourth quarter.
Midway through the final quarter, a four-play, 48-yard drive ended when Dalluge broke free of several missed tackles en route to a 25-yard touchdown run. Ehlke added the conversion to make the final score 20-0.
Jordan Manus led Bronco defenders with 13 total tackles, followed by Bob Fink with nine, Justin Meyer and Jordan Hansen with eight each; Ken Reichenauer, Colton Slaughter and Kyle Reynolds with seven apiece; Austin Eide with five, Mike Bock with three, Rick Johnson and Josh Hildebrand with two apiece; and Jose Duran, Joel Brooks and Cole Reynolds with one each.
B-K closes the season with a 2-7 record, 1-6 in district play; and will lose Derek Kindwall, Mike Bock, Rick Johnson, Bob Fink, Justin Meyer, Josh Hildebrand, Landon Worden, Jordan Manus, Kyle Reynolds, James Daily and Ken Reichenauer to graduation.
