NEXT IRP PLAY IS A COMEDY
11/05/2009
THE Iowa River Players are working on a comedy for the whole family which will be presented on two weekends in December at the theater in Rowan.
"The Great Big Doorstep" is now in rehearsal. The setting for the play is the home of Commodore and Mrs. Crochet and their six children of Grass Margin, Louisiana. Keeping her family together and seeing that her children make it to the next meal are poor Mrs. Crochet's main concerns. But Commodore has big dreams of a fine, big house to match the "stupendable" doorstep that their son Arthur fished out of the Mississippi River.
"The Great Big Doorstep" was one of two novels written by E. P. O'Donnell and published in 1942. It was later rewritten for the stage by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, possibly the most popular screenwriters during the Golden Age of Hollywood, and whose film credits include "The Thin Man", "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Father of the Bride".
The cast of this production includes some seasoned veterans as well as newcomers to the IRP stage. Commodore is played by Kurt Hartmann of Latimer, and Mrs. Crochet is played by Luanne Krabbe of Belmond. The older children are portrayed by Jamie Huffman, Megan O'Connor and Trevor Grummitt, all of Clarion. The ten-year old twins are double cast: Mariah Smith and Lexie Hartmann of Belmond will play the twins for three of the performances, while Frances Kem and Eevie Sherman of Clarion will play them for the alternate performances. Uncle Dewey is played by Paul Bamford of Belmond, Tayo Delacroix by Chance Wahl of Clarion, and Mr. Tobin by Zach Reed of Lake Cornelia. Karen Smith of Belmond takes the role of the dreaded landlady Mrs. Dupre, and Dawn Sherman of Clarion is the florist from New Orleans, Mrs. Beaumont Crochet.
Dates for the show are December 4-6 and 11-13. Tickets will be available at the door for $10. A savings of $2 per ticket will be applied to advance orders mailed to IRP Tickets, PO Box 22, Belmond. Advance tickets will be held at the box office for pick up the day of the show. Students will be admitted for the price of $1 on Saturday evenings. Handicap seating is available upon request.
