Senatobian charged in fatal hit and run

A Senatobia native has been charged with first degree murder following a Sunday morning hit and run in Panola County.
District Attorney John Champion has announced that a man identified as Matthew Whitten Darby, 17, has been charged in the hit and run death of John Butts, 61, of Como.
The incident, on Highway 310 in Como, occurred after the burglary of a nearby church. Darby had two passengers at the time, an 18-year-old and a 15-year-old.
Darby has also been charged with burglary of the church, along with the 15-year-old. The 18-year-old has not been charged.
Darby appeared in Panola County Justice Court Tuesday and his bond was increased to $300,000. It was initially set at $50,000.
Darby has also been charged with malicious mischief, according to Panola County Sheriff Dennis Darby. The incident is not being considered a hate crime.
Sheriff Darby said that the automobile has been impounded as authorities collect evidence and that the Mississippi Highway Patrol is assisting with a reconstruction of the accident.
Sheriff Darby also said that he and the suspect are not related.

i cannot believe whit is being charged with 1st degree murder. i know him as a person and to say he would kill someone on purpose is absolutely inaccurate. he is not the type of person to do such a thing intentionally.
