Because of impending Friday weather, the Senatobia Warriors and Lafayette Commodores decided to move their duel to Thursday night. A Clarion Ledger "highlight" game, the district championship was potentially on the line. In Lafayette's previous 3 games, all district games, the Commodores won 42 - 0, 49 - 0 and 55 - 6; the Warriors were coming off their closest game of the season and a by-week. The first score was an impressive 89 yard touchdown pass from Herrington to Kentrell Bowen. The game remained tight throughout the 1st quarter and into the second where the Warriors lead 14 - 7. The Warriors would not score again. The game was an intense fight throughout. Players were chippy, coaches and crowds were animated and the referees were highly sensitive. Many punts and personal fouls later, the Commodores won 27 - 14. Next week the Warriors travel to Tunica to resume District play against Rosa Fort. The Lions will enter the game with a winning record of 5 - 3; 3 wins over district opponents. Oakley's post-game comments were strikingly reminiscent of comments I heard a player say in 2004. When Senatobia lost their first game of the season to Hernando in 2004, Sean Johnson said "14 - 1 is not a bad record." Senatobia finished the season 14 - 1 state champion. After Senatobia's first loss of the season to Lafayette in 2009, Coach Oakley's said, "you can learn from this and grow from this." "Nine - one is not a bad record at all; maybe we'll see them (Lafayette) again sometime soon." The rest is still unwritten... On a different note, I would like to remind everyone what it means to be a Warrior: Being a Warrior is about exhibiting pride in everything you do. It is also about expressing an anticipation of wins, and a grand disappointment when we don't, but more importantly, being a Warrior is about having a sense of class... in victory and defeat. The expectation of sportsmanship, however, does not end on the field. It extends into the home of every participating player and most especially into the public arena of the football grandstands. Everyone involved in this great game is a human being; let us not forget. There are places in the world where people allow themselves the privilege of unbridled emotions - where they say and do what they wish with no regard for others. Senatobia football will certainly NOT be one of those places. Keep it in check folks. As always - be at the game by 7 p.m. and everybody wear BLUE!
