Viva political correctness!
One More Time - Comment and Observation By: Joe Lee III November 06, 2009

Newly-appointed Chancellor Dan Jones says he's ordering the Ole Miss Band to stop playing a traditional rendition blending "Dixie" and the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" if students keep chanting "The South will rise again."

Perhaps the University's prime educator missed class the day Dale Carnegie was the guest speaker. Maybe medical school does not dwell much on the First Amendment.

It has been our observation that threatening college students frequently brings about undesired results.

Of course, the whole uproar is part of a larger, ongoing political correctness campaign at the University.

Colonel Rebel had to go. The Dixie-BHR medley has to go. The name of the team has to be changed.

Some say even the name of the entire state should also be changed due to the possibility the word "Mississippi" might have bad connotations to the ears of some.

As for the school name, perhaps we should consider "Big River University." The yearbook, for which the school was originally named, could be the "All Wet."

Maybe the team could be the "Catfish."

Ooops. That name might offend PETA. Too bad Delta State has already copyrighted "The Fighting Okra."

If the self-important faculty Senate and the rookie chancellor hadn't gotten involved, the whole issue would have probably died, or at least be given the attention it deserves -- none.

Next the school will outlaw bumper stickers.

Budget shortfall

Some experts tell us the Mississippi budget is facing a possible shortfall of $500 million.

This is serious business. For years politicians in Washington, Mississippi, and other states have been spending money like there was no tomorrow in order to buy votes so they could keep their jobs.

Now some of the chickens are coming home to roost.

Unfortunately the feds think the only answer is more taxes and more debt. Both of these options are exactly the wrong answers.

New chant

Maybe some smart college student at the school in Oxford should start a chant "Fiscal responsibility is gonna rise again."

Geez, and people wonder why the Rebels cannot win an SEC Championship in football without 'Jim Crow' as their '12th Man'?

I really hope that short-sighted, misinformed Ole Miss fans will continue to celebrate the Old South and memorialize traitors. Coach Nutt ought to be able to sell that gameday atmosphere to recruits at least as well as Billy Brewer. And, by the way, there's nothing about the Old South that is worth celebrating.
