Nothing beats a good puddle!

One morning last week as I was walking out the door of the donut shop, I heard a young mother saying, "Walk around it. Walk around it. Walk around it!" The next thing I heard was the distinctive noise of a little foot hitting a puddle. What is it about critters and mud puddles and parking lot puddles? The story hit close to home, as a few times a week I pick up the Beauregard Critter and take him to nursery school. Sometimes he is very fussy about not getting his shoes wet. Sometimes he dives right in. It took me a while, but I finally broke the code. I have noticed as we arrive at his chosen breakfast venue after a rain, he looks me straight in the eye as I am unbuckling the seat restraint. I think he is going to be a doctor, because I have determined that he is diagnosing as to whether my back hurts that day. If I display any pain, it's "Daddy Joe will you carry me over that puddle. I don't want to get my tennis shoes wet." Of course he was sloshing through the mud in the same shoes the day before. If Dr. Beau determines the aged spine is OK, then he troops out of the car and right through the water with great delight. If the traffic is heavy and I need to carry him, it's WWIII. "I am a big boy, Daddy Joe, I can walk." I learned a trick the other day. When I get out of the car on humid days my glasses turn to milk. He thinks that is hilarious. He's then happy to hold my hand and "lead" me across to the door. (Hey, I didn't just fall off a turnip truck, ya know. Even I can sometimes outsmart a four-year-old.) He has the most fun, however, when it is pouring down rain. Ordinarily, he hops into the car seat and gets in order quite quickly, but if it is raining and I am standing out in the rain or leaning halfway in the car bucking the harness, there is always some sort of a delay. The young mother at the donut shop was facing the same soggy dilemma that morning, except she had two critters to transport. Hats off to moms everywhere!
