Food expedition in B'ham
One More Time - comment and observation By: Joe Lee, III September 15, 2009

Last week the Boss of the House and I went over to Birmingham to meet with our first born, who is in the process of moving to Houston, but is on a three- month assignment in Miami.

Three months in Miami. It's a tough life.

The BOH is already salivating over the possibility of meeting him at Thanksgiving and going to Joe's Stone Crab Restaurant.

Speaking of eating, and she almost always is, we tried out Ruth's Chris Steak House while in Birmingham. It is in the Embassy Suites hotel. Like all the Ruth's we have tried, it was delicious and the service was top notch, but our favorite for ambience and service is still the one in Memphis at Shady Grove and Poplar.

The new one in North Jackson is good, too. The Birmingham outlet (like all restaurants) needs a no baseball cap at the table rule.

Boycott becomes 'buycott'

Another food venture led us to the Whole Foods Market. We made a special effort to drop by there as the leftist crowd has been sponsoring a boycott on the place for a remark made by the Whole Food's president, which was not complementary of Mrs. Pelosi's and Mr. Reid's health care plan.

We stopped by the store in Birmingham. It is the biggest and nicest store I have ever been in. The BOH and I bought a few items not available at local stores, due to low demand. For instance, there must have been 200 different cheeses at the place. There were two big antipasta bars and a real bar with wine! It was early and I was driving, so I did not partake of the spirits.

The store was pretty crowded and well- stocked. It did not look like the boycott was having much affect other than bringing us into the store.

McCormick and Schmick

One more eatery worth trying is McCormick and Schmick's Seafood Restaurant. We have eaten at one in Washington, so we decided to try the one in Birmingham.

I had shrimp and grits, which I do not remember seeing on the Washington menu. It was excellent -- on a par with the City Grocery in Oxford. It was different, but about as good. The BOH had halibut. She was not too excited about it, but service was top notch.

City Grocery, incidentally, is the holy grail for shrimp and grits.
