Pie in the sky?

Washington has decreed that automobile manufacturers will have to average 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016.

There was little industry opposition to this because the White House and the UAW now operate two of the nation's three automobile companies: Chrysler and GM.

The politicians say the new standards will increase the cost of automobiles $1,300, but that we will save over $2,000 in fuel over the life of the vehicle. How do politicians, who have never run a company, never even had a real job, know these figures? These are the same guys who believe we can borrow our way out of debt.

A cleaner planet and the use of less fuel from the Middle East certainly are desirable goals, but no one knows the cost of a gallon of gas five years from now when the U.S. dollar is worth a fraction of today's rate because of all the
hyper-inflation created by hyper-debt.

History teaches us that if a politician tells us something will cost $1,300, we'll be lucky if it ultimately costs just $5,000. If a politician tells us we'll save $2,000, we are lucky if we don't go in the hole two or three thousand.

By the way, Washington has decreed that cars will pollute 30 percent less while they are getting all this incredible gas mileage.

What is the current asking price of the Brooklyn Bridge, anyway? Know where we can buy any swamp land cheap?
