Elizabeth Good and Brady Nelson of the Westside Hustlers 4-H club showed the grand champion steer and heifer at the 2012 Boone County Fair held July 12-15. New horse stalls made for safer environment Both the 4-H and FFA program empowers youth to have fun, build confidence and relationships, set individual and team goals, give and receive honest feedback, and learn new skills they will need in life. One way this is done is through 4-H project work and education. This year the Boone County 4-H'ers involved in the horse project learned those things and many more by working together in a safe environment, thanks to the generous support of the Leonard Good Foundation. The Boone County 4-H New Horse Stalls Initiative has safety as its number one priority. In the past the horses at the Boone County fair had less than desirable stalling conditions. Horses had to stand in close proximity to other horses and if horses were not used to these conditions they would often fight by kicking and trying to get loose. The Box Stall Initiative will change that and focus on the safety of horse, exhibitors and spectators. Through the generosity of the Leonard Good Foundation, the Box Stall Initiative got off to a great start. The Foundation's grant of $10,000 allowed Boone County 4-H to purchase 10 box stalls. The other stalls used at the 2012 Boone County fair were rented. The goal is to eventually purchase 80 box stalls total. A gold name plate located near the door of the box stalls marks the stalls donated by the Leonard Good Foundation. Fund raising efforts continue, including the can redemption efforts of filling a stall, a box stall located outside of the Boone County Extension Office at 603 Story Street in Boone.
