MANSON, NORTHWEST WEBSTER has a knack for putting games away in the third quarter. The Cougars did exactly that here Friday night on the way to a 28-0 win over the Bulldogs. The winners had already earned a postseason spot before the season finale, but with this victory they finished with a 5-2 Class 1A District 7 record and 7-2 overall. The 'Dogs ended at 0-9. Cougar Kyle Twait blasted over from the 10 at 9:17 in the first act. A run for the extra points failed and that was it for first half scoring, 6-0. Bulldog defense was at its finest at times during those first quarters, prompting Coach Ken Vigdal to comment, "Probably our best effort of the season. We had a couple of kids out with the flu and another hampered with an injury." Cougar Coach Jeff Anliker noticed the 'Dogs effort, too. "It was a little scary. We left 17 kids including six starters at home because of the flu. Ogden really played hard and did well, especially in the first half. But our kids did well, too. Overall, I was very pleased the way they performed under the circumstances." Offensively, Ogden struggled. The 'Dogs had a good drive going late in the first chapter but a pass interception by Cougar Connor Brown ruined that at the enemy 32. Six plays later Bulldog Jared Hefler recovered a fumble on the O28. The local gridmen were forced to punt on their next two possessions, but the defense halted a Cougar threat on the O7 at 1:02. The 'Dogs fumbled three plays later and Zach Steinhoff recovered on the O16. The half ended with Ogden's Tyler Happe sacking Twait on the O25. It was bad news after that as Gabe Summerhays' third quarter kickoff was hauled in by Steinhoff on the O16. Steinhoff ripped through everybody as he rambled 84 yards to pay dirt. Twait tossed to the same player for the extra points to make it 14-0 at 11:46. The Cougars started another scoring drive on their own 36 after a Bulldog punt. The 10 plays that followed included passes for 11, 8 and 6 yards and a 19 yard jaunt by Ryan Sams. Twait fired to Steinhoff for the 6 yard tally. Chris Stuhrenberg booted the extra point, putting the score at 21-0 with 5:28 left in the third period. The winners put their final points on the board when Twait tossed a 16 yarder to Kaden Cue. Stuhrenberg kicked the extra point for a 28-0 score with 6:27 left in the game. A MNW field goal fell short at 2:43. Nick Katzenmeier led the local offense, finishing with 99 yards on 21 carries. His longest gainer was 14 yards. The only other Bulldog with positive yardage was Asher Van Sickle with 12 yards in 5 assignments. Three Cougars had at least 25 yards rushing: Ryan Sams, 4/50 yards; Stuhrenberg, 14/38 yards; and Steinhoff, 3/25 yards. Twait and Drake Harman had 11 yards apiece. Steinhoff caught 11 passes for 104 yards and a TD. Cue's 15 yard reception went for another 6-pointer. Sean Nichols had 9 solo/assisted tackles followed by Thomas Vigdal and Garrett Cook with 8 respectively. Van Sickle and Happe had 7 apiece. Tanner Wilson and John Brown were credited with 6. Summerhays' 7 punts averaged 29.7 yards, his longest 35 yards. Cougar Coach Anliker said he was impressed with Ogden at the game's end, knowing the Bulldogs had gone 0-9 on the year. "They weren't hanging their heads," he commented. "They represented their school well. We've been there. We were 0-9 several years ago."
