After a solid showing at Story City two lady Bulldogs, Ally Fillmore and Rachael Oien, broke into the top ten list of the school's best ever times since the girls switched to the 4-K distance in 2002. The girls, without top runner Olivia Diggs, finished fifth at the Norsemen Invitation Thursday, Sept. 24. Bronson Mayse picked up a medal while leading the boys into ninth place overall. Perry plays host to the Leon Fox Invite Thursday. The Ogden teams travel to Lake City Tuesday, Oct. 6. BOYS TEAM STANDINGS 1. Saydel 58 2. Roland-Story 64 3. South Hamilton 97 4. Gilbert 114 5. Brian Good reached another milestone by breaking 20 minutes for the first time and Austin Highland and Wyatt Westberg ran under 21 minutes for the first time. Good placed 45th in 19:48. "She was focused and aggressive throughout. Besides Olivia, Ogden hasn't had a girl run that fast since 2005. Rachael Oien also ran very well." Fillmore came in 9th with a time of 17:07 and Oien 13th in 17:18 to earn medals. Their times put them at #7 and #9 respectively on Ogden's list of top runners. Elly Adams and Michaela Halbur also ran season best times placing 37th in 18:19 (Adams) and 37th, 18:33 (Halbur). "We'll need them to keep improving like they have in order to meet our end-of-season goals," Kobliska tells. "Rumor Clark has done really well since making the varsity team after the Ballard meet. She ran this course three minutes faster than a year ago." He contributes this to her good work ethic. Clark finished the race in 19:14 for 45th place. Alyssa Shannon placed 47th in 19:36 and Meghan Johnson 49th, 19:45 - both season best times. Junior varsity Bulldog JV runners Marissa Elsberry and Katie Fillmore placed 17th and 19th respectively - Elsberry in 21:43 and K. Fillmore in 21:58. Junior high Evan Klicker and Sydney Bishop led the Ogden junior high teams at Story City. Following are the results: Boys: Klicker, 27th, 14:27; Trey Thompson, 30th, 14:35; Jordan Hance, 45th, 17:33. Girls: Bishop, 21st, 15:13; Megan Kimball, 40th, 16:23; Elizabeth Good, 55th, 17:27. AT HUMBOLDT Ogden competed against 20 other teams ranging from Class 1A to 4A at the Humboldt Invitational in what Coach Ryan Kobliska says is the most competitive regular season race they'll run all season as there are no divisions for school size. The Bulldogs were up against some schools three to four times the size of Ogden. Mayse and Diggs earned medals for Ogden, finishing in the top 40 of their respective teams. The boys placed 14th and the girls 13th. Championships were claimed by Boone (boys) and Humboldt (girls). BOYS TEAM STANDINGS 1. Boone 41 2. Algona 51 3. Garner-Hayfield 126 4. Fort Dodge 143 5. Southeast Webster 486 "We were hoping for a bit more from the guys as a team, but we did have some bright spots," said the Bulldog Coach. "Bronson had his first breakout race and beat his personal record by 20 seconds. He was a tireless worker this summer and I think this is just the tip of the iceberg of what he can do before he graduates." Mayse finished in 18:45 just cracking into the medal bracket at 40th place. Running number two for Ogden is Shaw who finished in 60th with a time of 19:30 B. Good crossed the line in 20:19 to place 84th among the 132 varsity runners. "Brian has really established himself as a solid middle scorer for us the past two races. He's adapted really well to the sport in just his first year out," explained Kobliska. Kobliska is hoping Pierce can produce some consistent quality times outside the top three. "He wasn't quite there today, but he showed last week (20:20 at Ballard) and last season that he can provide that." The coach would like to see someone step up and convincingly claim the fifth spot - a problem created when senior captain Luther Thompson went out with an injury. Also, due to some recent sickness, Rinker moved up from JV and ran his best time by a full minute. Pierce finished 108th in 21:15. Westberg came in at 113th in 21:46, Highland 117th in 22:11 and Rinker 128th in 22:55. Boettcher finished first among the Bulldog JV squad with a time of 24:18. Sims ran 24:49 and Williams, 28:01. Clarion-Goldfield 376 Diggs, whose training was disrupted by an injury as of late, had hopes of finishing higher than her 22nd place at Humboldt. She ran a time of 17:06 to lead the Bulldogs. A.Fillmore and Adams continue to be strong contributors to the team. Fillmore came in 56th with a time of 18:10 and Adams, 77th in 18:43. "Michaela Halbur keeps getting better and better," said Kobliska. "She's already improved by over three minutes since her first race of the year. She also became our fifth girl this season to break 19:00, after only three girls did it last year, which is a good indication of our improvement as a team." Clark filled the final scoring spot in her first varsity race of the season, cutting over three minutes off the same course time last year, crossing in 19:54 at 104th place. Oien sat out the meet due to injury so the coach was looking for Halbur, Clark, Shannon and Johnson to make up for the absence. They responded and each ran best times of the season. Shannon finished 109th in 20:25 followed closely by Johnson at 110th, 20:27. Pacing each other in the junior varsity race were Chelsea Price and K. Fillmore in 62nd and 65th with times of 23:33 and 23:43. PHOTO ID: SIBLING SUPPORT.
