THE BULLDOGS STARTED out well enough Friday at Jewell, forcing the South Hamilton Hawks to punt after their first three plays following the opening kickoff. Bulldog Tyler Happe blocked the punt, and three plays later Gabe Summerhays' 20 yard field goal split the uprights for a 3-0 Ogden lead at 9:18. Unfortunately, the Hawks stormed back to cover 69 yards in eight plays to go ahead 6-3 at 6:01, and never looked back, enroute to a 56-16 victory. On that drive, Hawk Devan Quam bullied his way over from the 11, but the try for extra points failed. That was it for first quarter scoring, 6-3. The winners started their next scoring drive from their own 48 late in the first frame. They were flagged for illegal procedure and managed to recover their own fumble on the O25 as the buzzer sounded. The first play of the second period produced a great defensive play when Bulldog Adam Adreon broke up a 3rd and 15 aerial 25 yards out. But a 21 yard bomb to the O4 on the next try kept the drive alive. Christian Cottingham tallied from there and a pitch to Quam put the score at 14-3 at 11:27. Quam's 12 yard TD and Sam Block's kick made it 21-3 with 5:26 left in the half. But the 'Dogs weren't about to quit as they reenergized to put up a great goal line stand as the first half ended. The Hawk drive had started on their own 49. Ogden made it tough going with big stops by Asher Van Sickle and Tanner Wilson. The Hawks fumbled again, but recovered quickly. Jesse Monthei fired to Preston Hocking on the 2. Three plays later, however, the Hawks were still stranded on the 1. Then came an illegal procedure penalty against the winners to end the half, 21-3. Bulldog fans weren't unhappy with their team. The 'Dogs seemed to have momentum in their favor as they headed for the locker rooms. But the third quarter didn't start well for Ogden. Van Sickle took the opening kickoff and then slipped on his own 5. Four plays later, Quam hauled in a punt and galloped 37 yards to TDland. Block's kick made it 28-3 at 10:06. It was then, however, that Ogden seemed to come alive, aided by penalties against SH, including a personal foul call. Ogden was perched on the enemy 14. Jared Hefler ate up 3 yards, followed by an illegal procedure violation that pushed the 'Dogs back to the 14. Van Sickle carried to the 10 after an incomplete pass. Then came that personal foul call against SH that moved the pigskin to the 5. Hefler bolted to the 3 from where Thomas Vigdal ran in. Summerhays' kick made it 28-10 at 5:13. A couple of plays later, Adreon caused a Hawk fumble that Bulldog Wade Olson recovered on the 15. After picking up a first down on the 2, Hefler crashed over for the score. An illegal procedure call against Ogden resulted in a failed PAT. Ogden trailed 28-16 with 2:34 left in the third act. The fourth quarter was all bad news for Ogden as the Hawks added 28 more points to their score. Monthei scored on a 28 yard fumble recovery run with Block kicking the extra point at 11:22. (35-16). Cottingham tallied from the 13, with Block again kicking the PAT at 10:02 (42-16). Chris Jacobson galloped 13 yards to score, with Block kicking the PAT at 7:15 (49-16). The final TD came at :25 when Dillon Luhman charged in from 27 yards out. Block booted the extra point. Coaches' comment "I told the boys afterwards that I knew they couldn't be feeling good about the game. Probably the biggest disappointment was the final score. I told them they'll just have to put all of this behind them and go on from here. We've opened against a 3A and 2A school. Now we'll be able to compete in our own Class 1A District," Coach Ken Vigdal said. "We've got to get our offense going and we have to improve on our blocking. We had our moments against South Hamilton. They're a good team and we knew that going up there." Hawk Coach Todd Coy commented, "I was pleased with our overall performance. We're not a big team or overly fast, but despite making some mistakes, we did well." Hefler led the Ogden offense with 38 yards on 14 carries. Baumhover had 27 yards on 9 tries. The Hawks had three carries with strong performances: Quam, 10 carries for 87 yards; Drew Frederick, 13/69 yards.; and Cottingham, 9/55 yards. Tanner Wilson sparked the Ogden defense with 7 solos and 5 assists; Van Sickle, 8 solos and an assist; Baumhover, 5/1; Happe, 7/2; Brett Daniel, 7/1; Sean Nichols, 3/1; and John Brown, 1/3. Monthei and Cottingham recovered fumbles for the Hawks while Herschberger had an interception. Offensively, Quam tore up 87 yards on 10 carries. Cottingham was credited with 55 yards on 9 attempts. Frederick was 13/69. The Bulldogs, 0-2, take on West Central Valley, Stuart, here Friday.
