Alice Conrad, 78, of Ogden, died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009 at the Boone County Hospital. Funeral services are Saturday, Nov. 14 at 1:30 p.m. at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall in Boone with Rev. Rayl Robbins officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, west of Boone. Alice was born in Nevis, MN Dec. 30, 1930, the daughter of Andrew and Laura (Nelson) Shortridge. On September 17, 1947 she married Darrell Kriens in Park Rapids, MN. She remarried Richard Conrad March 20, 1970 at Walker, MN. The couple owned and operated the Adobe Lounge in Boone from 1971 to 1984. They lived in Boone moving to Ogden in 1996. Alice and Richard enjoyed camping, fishing, boating, wintering in Arizona, and spending time at their lake home in Backus, MN. In earlier years, Alice was licensed in home health care, visiting many people. She also was a nurse's aide at the Boone County Hospital and a volunteer at the Ogden Manor and former Ledges Manor. Alice also was employed at Hy-Vee's Regal Liquors. She enjoyed needlework, growing roses, baking, especially banana nut bread, cinnamon rolls, and pies, making homemade salsa, country music, the Iowa Hawkeyes, and dogs, especially Heidi. Alice enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren and was very proud of her children's accomplishments. In later years, Alice enjoyed yard work and was very meticulous about the appearance of her yard and enjoyed keeping in contact with her siblings. Alice was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; a stepson Robin Conrad; daughter-in-law, Mary Hayes Kriens; brother Jack and two sisters, Barbara and Andrea. She is survived by a son Don Kriens of Oakdale, MN; a daughter Vicki Kriens Miller and husband Tom of Aitkin, MN; two stepsons, Ricky Conrad and Ritchie Conrad and wife Mary, all of Boone; a brother Andrew Nelson and wife Maggie of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; five sisters: Laura Gottman and husband Denny of Palmyra, MO, Margaret Simpson of Conesville, Ohio, Theone "Tess" Jordan of Livingston, ID, Bonnie Boehm and husband Don of Post Falls, ID, and Aubrea Gilman and husband Mike of Coeur d'Alene of ID; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel Friday, Nov. 13 from 1 until 8 p.m. where the family will be present to receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Visitation continues Saturday from 8 a.m. until service time. Memorials may be directed to the family to establish a memorial to a nonprofit cancer organization at a later date.
