ELYRIA -- Ohio State football fans still basking in the glow of the school's first national championship since 1968 are shelling out bucks to show their support for their beloved Buckeyes.

Area retailers said items such as hats, T-shirts and sweatshirts commemorating the Buckeyes' surprising and thrilling 31-24 double overtime win over Miami in Friday's Fiesta Bowl were moving off shelves faster than Maurice Clarett on a long touchdown run.

Dick's Sporting Goods in Elyria received a couple hundred of the official locker room T-shirts made by Nike and worn by the Ohio State players after Friday's win, but sold all of them by Sunday.

''We got them on Saturday night and didn't put them on the floor until Sunday and they were all gone by the end of the day,'' said store manager Glenn Allen.

Allen said he wasn't sure if his store was going to order any more of the shirts, but said some official championship caps made by Nike are in stock.

Eric Salas, of Lorain, made his way to the Westfield Shoppingtown Midway mall yesterday and bought a cap and sweatshirt with Ohio State 2002 National Champions emblazoned on them.

Salas, 32, who wore a Cavs stocking cap and Browns parka while shopping, picked up his national championship sweatshirt for $28 at J. C. Penney and shelled out $22 for his Nike official cap at The Finish Line.

''I got a $30 gift card from Penneys for Christmas and I had a feeling the Buckeyes were going to win so I waited to use it,'' said Salas, who said he paid cash for the hat.

Nate Hitchcock, a clerk at The Finish Line, said the store was expecting a shipment of the hot Nike official locker room shirts today or tomorrow. The store already has the official Nike hooded OSU championship sweatshirt for $50.

Inside the mall's Fan Mania store, assistant manager Nate Herrington sat by his register in his otherwise empty store.

His store had Ohio State national championship T-shirts.

''We put the shirts out (Sunday) and they've been selling,'' said Herrington, who said Ohio State gear sales made up almost all of his sales for yesterday, and about 50 percent of the store's sales during the just completed Christmas.

''It's something to cheer for in the state of Ohio,'' said Herrington, referring to the state's history of its sports teams torturing loyal fans with near-misses.
