The Washington club kept constant pressure on Wamogo goalie Becca Sadowski, outshooting the Warriors by the wide margin of 35-13.
"She was really awesome," said Shepaug head coach Jaye Stuart of Sadowski's effort. "Our forwards were on fire for the first time this season and they played every ball as if it was their last shot. They displayed power and accuracy and every shot was on target."
Shepaug got great offensive efforts from Ally Bierce, Zoe Klavana, Miriah Walsh, Meg Piersall and Aimee Cowan, a lineup that Stuart nicknamed Shepaug's "Assault Team."
The game was in stark contrast to Monday's affair that saw Nonnewaug take advantage of Shepaug's defensive breakdowns in front of the Spartan net to score four times in a 4-2 win.
"It was a fairly even game but we couldn't seal off our defensive circle," said Stuart.
Lindsey Yealer scored a pair of goals, and Caroline Kuzma and Katie Accashian tallied a goal apiece to lead Nonnewaug. Abby Suslevich, Alexa Brazauskas, Caitlin Drakley and Accashian assisted on the scores. Carolyn Michener had three saves in net for the Chiefs (10-2-1).
Bierce scored both goals for Shepaug, with Linnea Quist and Cowan assisting on the tallies. Kathryn Droessler had five saves.
Playing well in the loss were midfielders Quist, Aimee Reutzel and Meg Woodruff. Stacey Sullivan enjoyed a superb two-game stretch, making five saves in Shepaug's defensive circle against Nonnewaug and Wamogo.
Despite the losses Shepaug still stands in good stead in the Class S state rankings where it is currently in ninth place with 12 points. Berkshire League rival Lewis Mills leads the Class S rankings with 22 points off an 11-0-1-0 record.
Shepaug's team scoring statistics reflect the club's record. The Spartans have scored 16 goals and given up 17. The club's largest margin of victory was five goals when it beat Housatonic, 6-1, while the most lopsided loss was a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Lewis Mills, ironically the day before the Housy win. Three of Shepaug's five losses have been by one goal and two have come in overtime.
Shepaug attempts to get back on the winning track against Northwestern at home today. The Highlanders are ranked sixth in Class S and boast a 9-4-1-0 mark. The Winsted club beat the Spartans, 1-0, in overtime the first time the teams met this fall.
