Everyone knew the Green Wave boys soccer team would be good this year. As it's turned out, New Milford is good enough to be on the precipice of winning its first-ever state title.

New Milford is not the only local soccer team readying for a trip to the big dance this season.

It was the Indians who finally took down the Green Wave.
A great run came to an end for the New Milford field hockey team last Friday, as it lost to Farmington in overtime, 2-1, in the quarterfinal round of the State Class L Tournament.

The Shepaug girls made an impressive postseason run this year. After a slow start to the season, the team strung together a slew of victories to make it all the way to the State Class S semifinal match.

It's the time of year when high school seniors are seriously considering their options concerning where they'll be going to college next fall. For one Brookfield student, that matter was put to rest this week.

New Milford boys cross country competed as a team at the New England Championship Meet and was the highest-placing group from Connecticut, taking sixth place on the course, last Saturday at Wickham Park in Manchester.

Jeff Sheldon of Southbury ran to victory at the weekly Roxbury Road Race Series last Saturday, covering a challenging 11.2-mile course in 73-minutes, 1-second.

The New Milford football team raced out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead on the road against Oxford, but couldn't hold off the Wolverines in their den, as the home club scored 40 points in the second and third quarters to beat the Green Wave, 47-28, on Monday.
New Milford looked for a while like it was going to notch its third win of the season, scoring twice in the first while keeping Oxford off the board.
Keith Kirwan-Welsh took in a 35-yard scoring pass from John Krafick with 7:49 on the clock, and then caught a two-point conversion pass from Krafick for an 8-0 New Milford lead.
The Green Wave made it 14-0 when Matt Becker grabbed a 6-yard touchdown pass from Krafick with 30 seconds left in the opening quarter. The two-point conversion pass failed.
After Oxford scored twice, New Milford took a 22-14 lead when Krafick threw his third touchdown pass of the half, this time an 18-yarder to Rory Kennedy, with 1:30 remaining. But Oxford pulled to within two points with a touchdown with 15 seconds left in the half.
The Wolverines took control of the game in the third, scoring 20 unanswered points.
New Milford, 2-7, scored the final touchdown of the game with 6:30 remaining when Kirwan-Welsh took a kickoff 80 yards for a score.
New Milford will wrap up the season with its traditional Thanksgiving Day clash against New Fairfield, this Thursday at home at 10 a.m.

The Brookfield football team made a valiant try for its third win of the season but fell just short to Joel Barlow last Friday night, 22-20.
Trailing, 22-14, late in the game, Brian Kelly hauled in an 8-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Brandt with 1:13 remaining to pull the Bobcats to within striking distance. But the subsequent two-point conversion attempt failed and Barlow hung on for the victory.
Brandt had a superb game for the Bobcats, completing 11-of-20 passes for 123 yards and two scores. He also hit David DePoi on a 6-yard scoring strike in the second quarter and rushed five yards for a score in the third. Brandt gained 106 yards and 15 carries.
DePoi caught five passes for 66 yards, while Mike Palicz rushed for 28 yards.
Brookfield, which fell to 2-7, was to play at Bethel Thursday (after press time) in the annual Thanksgiving Day contest.

Last week, the New Milford field hockey team followed up a highly successful regular season by winning all three games of the South-West Conference Tournament and winning a league championship. The squad kept up the winning this week, taking a victory in the first round of the State Class L Tournament.

In the last game it played before the state tourney, the New Milford boys soccer team suffered a hard-to-take, 1-0, shootout defeat at the hands of Brookfield last Thursday. What made the loss even tougher was that it occurred in the South-West Conference championship match. It was the first SWC title for the Bobcats, and would have been the first league title for the Green Wave.

It was difficult to tell who was more excited about Shepaug's second-round Class S girls State Soccer Tournament victory Wednesday afternoon, head coach Al Ciarlo or his team.

The Bobcats lived to play another day.

The Brookfield boys soccer team captured its very first South-West Conference championship ever by beating New Milford on penalty kicks last Thursday, and coming out on top by a 1-0 score.

The New Milford girls soccer team played probably its best game of the season on Monday. Unfortunately, it came up a bit short.

The New Milford boys cross country team is still up and running, and there's still more to come.
