Falcons field hockey team is upbeat

The Joel Barlow High School field hockey team, after falling in penalty strokes to Newtown in last year's South-West Conference Tournament quarterfinals, got back to the conference playoffs hungry for a win this fall.

Fifth-seeded Barlow went to No. 4 Newtown for a playoff rematch and, last Friday, pulled out a 2-1 quarterfinal round win. Barlow went on to lose in the SWC semifinals, narrowly falling short 1-0 to top-seeded New Milford on Tuesday but the team has made strides in 2009 and the coaches and players aren't overlooking the success.
"We've come a long way. I just think that no matter how far we've gotten I'm just proud of all of us," Barlow player Sam Macchio said.
Macchio and Margaret O'Leary both had a goal and an assist in the win over Newtown. The Falcons built a 2-0 lead then fended off the Nighthawks, despite Newtown ending the game with a 14-6 shots on goal edge, to advance.
Barlow goaltender Amanda Macchio made 10 saves in the win then nearly lifted the Falcons to the SWC championship in an 11-save effort in the semis.
Barlow Coach Erika Profenno said strong defense and a solid work ethic have been keys to the success of the Falcons this year.
"I couldn't be prouder. This is the best group of girls I've ever coached in my four years here," Profenno said. "Their work ethic is incredible."
"It's so much fun. I really have a good time. Our team really works together," Sam Macchio added.
The Falcons will try to have a little more fun in the state playoffs next week. Seedings were expected to be announced Friday at casciac.org
