Quassy Adds Yo-Yo Swing Ride
02/25/2004
MIDDLEBURY - Quassy Amusement Park here will begin its 2004 season with the addition of the Yo-Yo super swing ride.

The new ride will debut when the park opens April 24 for its 96th season.

With a capacity of 32 passengers, the Yo-Yo is a family ride that has three phases during its operation.

First, guests are gently lifted into the air in suspended seats before the ride starts to rotate. Once the ride reaches its maximum height, the center tilts, offering a thrilling soaring experience.

The Yo-Yo has hundreds of fluorescent and incandescent lights for high visibility during evening operation. The Yo-Yo was built in Wichita, Kan., by Chance Rides.

"In Quassy's pursuit to keep changing with the times and bring new and exciting attractions to the park, we are excited to add another major ride to the repertoire," said George Frantzis II, one of the park's owners.

"We feel the Yo-Yo adds additional entertainment value to a day of family fun at Quassy."

The Yo-Yo will operate near the entrance to Quassy Beach and Saturation Station, the interactive family water play area which opened in 2003.

Saturation Station includes more than 30 water elements to entertain all age groups. Two multi-tiered platforms provide activities such as water cannons, bucket waterfalls and a variety of cascading fountains.

Two water slides 60 and 90 feet in length are attached to one platform.

The center of attention at Saturation Station is a huge dumping bucket atop a 30-foot tower. The tipping bucket unleashes more than 300 gallons of water onto a rooftop, creating a waterfall of fun for those standing near the structure.

Quassy Beach and Saturation Station open for the summer season on May 29. Admission to the beach is $6 per person. The beach is included in the price of an all-day ride/water wristband.

The park has refurbished its restaurant and Lakeside Theatre for 2004.

Park guests are also afforded the opportunity to conquer a 24-foot climbing wall at The Extreme Zone. The wall charts four separate paths to the top, with each path having a different level of difficulty.

Climbers make their ascent in a harness attached to a safety cable. Each climber is timed electronically. By kicking away from the wall's surface, participates safely descend to the ground.

The climbing wall was designed for use by children and adults. Extreme Engineering of Newcastle, Calif., manufactured the unit.

The Extreme Zone, new in 2003, is a pay-as-you-go attraction at Quassy, not included with the all-day wristband.

Quassy features more than 24 rides and attractions, including popular family rides such as the Tilt-A-Whirl, Paratrooper, Monster roller coaster, Trabant, Music Fest, The Big Flush water coaster and Rush Hour bumper cars.

There is a complete kiddyland for the younger generation, the Grand Carousel and Quassy Express train ride.

All-day ride wristbands or individual ride tickets may be purchased.

Starting May 7, 25-cent Friday Nights return to Quassy with ride tickets costing only a quarter after 5 p.m.

The park also has paddle boats and the Quassy Queen boat ride on Lake Quassapaug.

Dozens of popular skill and video games are located in the huge redemption arcade.

Midway games, a variety of food booths and live entertainment at the Lakeside Theatre help to round out a day at the traditional amusement park.

Quassy offers catered outings for 10 to 10,000 people in the privacy of the park's group pavilions.

The Birthday Party Fun Zone near kiddyland is available for private birthday parties.

Costume character Quassy Bear is the official mascot of the park and will be greeting guests on selected weekends.

Quassy will also host numerous special events during the 2004 season, including Magic in the Sky, a laser light spectacular in June, 3-D Fireworks July 4, classic car shows, live music, magicians and dancers.

The park is located on Route 64.
