The Wesson Cobras and Madison St. Joe Bruins used completely different objectives offensively to try and outwit each other but the end result saw the Cobras pound the football to victory with a sloppy 33-17 Friday night victory on a muddy field in Stone Stadium.
The Cobras (8-1) got a monstrous performance on senior night from senior tailback Jeromy Smith who blasted the Bruin defense for 235 yards on 39 carries and 3 touchdowns. Another senior, cornerback Dre' Smith, countered the offensive Smith with two giant, drive-killing interceptions to lead the defense on a night that saw the Bruins attempt 37 passes.

"I am so glad we pulled this one out," stated Jeromy Smith. "We relaxed in practice, but it worked out in the end and I am happy for my teammates."

The Cobras got on the board in quick fashion with Jeromy Smith pounding it in from 2 yards out only a minute and 10 seconds into the contest. The Cobras took the 6-0 lead after Jeromy Smith set his own touchdown up after returning the opening kickoff back 73 yards.

The Bruins (2-7) fired right back when talented wideout Stephen Toler took the ball 11 yards to paydirt. The Chase Blossman PAT gave the Bruins a 7-6 lead briefly.

Three minutes later in the first, the Cobras would watch wingback Deon Pendleton scamper 4 yards on the toss play to put the Cobras up 12-7. Dre' Smith took the same toss to the goal for the 2-point conversion run at the 3:07 mark of the contest to extend the lead to 14-7.

After Jeromy Smith scored his second TD on a 28-yard run to give the Cobras a 20-7 lead, the Bruins answered with a 28-yard Blossman field goal to cut the lead to 20-10.

The Cobras added another score 25 seconds before half when Pendleton hit the edge again and scored from 20 yards out. Austin Graham missed his third PAT of the first half and Wesson went to intermission leading 26-10.

The second half saw the Bruins and Cobras add one touchdown each in the third quarter. Jeromy Smith scored from 41 yards out for the Blue. Then Bruins quarterback Patton Willowby hit Toler on a 9-yard scoring strike to end the scoring at 33-17.

"We played good in spurts tonight but I am glad this one is over with," explained Wesson head coach Tommy Clopton. "I think our kids will be ready Friday night to see where we stack up against Puckett."

Willowby had an outstanding performance for the Bruins, passing for 327 yards on 21 completions. Toler had 6 receptions for 134 yards for St. Joseph. The problem was that the Bruins could not stop the bulldozing they took from the Cobras. In addition to Jeromy Smith's explosive night, Dre' Smith also hit the century mark with 101 yards on 5 carries.

Defensively, the Cobras were led by defensive backs Dre' Smith and Pendleton who had 11 tackles each. Defensive tackle Derek Lyles had 9 stops to add to the effort. Dre' Smith's two picks were huge for the winning momentum.

The Cobras travel to Puckett for a showdown with the new heavyweight of the district Friday at 7 p.m.
