WESSON - The Wesson Lady Cobras swept the Lake Lady Hornets 3-2 and 8-4 Tuesday night in the first round of the best of three series in the Class 2A State slowpitch softball playoffs.

Wesson (14-4) travels to Stringer Monday for the second round of the playoffs. The starting time was undecided at press time. Stringer (16-3) whipped Richton 20-0 and 4-3 last night. Lake was coached by Luke Cotman.

The Class 2A playoff games between Enterprise and Union have been moved to Thursday due to heavy rains Monday and Tuesday. The first game begins at 5 p.m. at Union.

"It was good to get the wins," said first-year Wesson head coach Jackie Stowe following the games. "Anytime you can win in the playoffs, it's good."

Stowe said she was pleased with winning pitcher Marley McCardle (0K, 1BB) who worked both games. "Marley calmed down and pitched well." Wesson 3, Lake 2

The Hornets jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the Cobras in the first inning. Wesson scored 1 run in the fourth and 1 in the fifth to tie the game at 2-all.

In the bottom of the eighth, Maura Smith singled with 1 out. Christina Fink advanced to first on a Hornet error. Macie McQuage singled to load the bases. Maddy Rials ripped a single to score Smith for the game-winning run.

Powering Wesson with 2 singles each were Rials, Shauntay Walker and McQuage. Fink, Smith and Marley McCardle singled.

For Lake, Kelsey Shaw led with a double. Laura Taylor, Tracey Wolfe, Abigail Calhoun and Hannah Clay hit safely.

The losing pitcher in the series was Kelsey Shaw. Wesson 8, Lake 4

The Cobras exploded for 3 runs in the top of the first inning for a 3-0 lead over the Hornets. Wesson pushed its lead to 4-0 in the top of the fourth but Lake came back with 4 runs to tie the game at 4-all.

In the fifth, Fink singled, then advanced to second and third, before stealing home plate to score the go-head run and give Wesson a 5-4 lead.

Seventh-inning action saw the Cobras add 3 runs for insurance and take an 8-4 lead on a 3-RBI single from Leah Greer.

Fink powered the Wesson batters with 4 singles. Maddy Rials tripled. Doubling was Walker. Mack Rials, Kimmie Kolpek, Smith, McQuage and McCardle hit safely.

For Lake, Ashton Parker and Taylor led with a pair of singles apiece. Amanda Williamson, LeAnna Boyle, Donald, Wolf, Clay and Calhoun singled.
