Freshman Chad White, 2009 Madison High School graduate, had open shots in the second half of Monday's South Dakota State Jackrabbits game against Mayville State in Brookings.
He took those shots (six 3-pointers) and scored 14 points in SDSU's 89-56 victory over the Comets, after playing less than a minute in the Jacks' first game against the Wyoming Cowboys on Friday.
His coach had nice things to say about last year's All-State first-team honoree.
"He's good. Chad has a great release and arch on his shots," said Coach Scott Nagy, whose team improved to 2-0 for the first time in the D-I era (since 2003-04). "He's probably our most versatile player because you can play him at the point, the two, the three, the four and he can guard all those people. He gives himself a chance to play over a lot of guys because of his versatility. If he shoots the ball like that, he is really hard to guard."
The 6-6 White was just trying to help his team.
"I was relaxed out there and wanted the ball. My teammates found me. I was getting open shots and I was knocking them down. It felt good all around," said White.
The freshman class, which includes former Bulldog Tony Fiegen and starter Nate Wolters, has added to the Jacks' depth this year.
"Going to my bench is great. It's eeny-meeny-miny-mo and I know I'm going to grab a good player out there and put him in," said Nagy.
White had two assists and a rebound in 18 minutes of play.
"Coach told me always to be ready," he said. "The competition is really good on the team and it makes everyone better."
