While Monday's exhibition game between Dakota State University and South Dakota State University will not count as an actual game, DSU Coach Gary Garner liked what he saw from his basketball team. "I think this our best game of the year," he said. "I think we played a lot better than we did last weekend in Sioux Falls." After losing two games at the University of Sioux Falls/Famous Dave's Classic, their season's best was not good enough to defeat SDSU on Monday. The Jackrabbits beat DSU 72-58 at Frost Arena in Brookings. "We battled them for 40 minutes and, yeah, they had control for most of the game. But I was encouraged," said Garner. "Before the game started, I was concerned that the game was going to get out of hand, but I thought we held our own." DSU's Derek Kreutzfeldt led all scorers with 17 points. He went 3-for-6 from the free throw line and made four of his nine 3-point attempts. "Three-pointers is always something I work hard in and I always like to use as a weapon," said Kreutzfeldt, who came away with two defensive steals. "This game was a great opportunity to get better. They are a talented team who are well coached. ``Coming in, we knew our chances of winning weren't good," he added, "but we knew if we played our hardest, we would came out happy. They won, but we're happy with our effort." Every player on both teams played at least three minutes, including Jackrabbits Tony Fiegen and Chad White, who won a state championship last year at Madison High School. With a few Madison natives in the crowd, Fiegen enjoyed SDSU's first non-scrimmage game in Brookings. "Chad and I were nervous, but it was great to be out there with him. We're each other's best friend on the court," said Fiegen, who got his lone two points with an assist from White. "Everything is new up here, but each day is getter better and I can't wait for the next four years. The support I received from everybody has been great." Scott Nagy, SDSU's coach, said that his main objective was getting the team ready for Wyoming on Friday -- not the final score. That didn't stop DSU's Jackson Parr from grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds and shooting 8-from-11 from the free throw line. Parr scored 16 points, which was more than all of the 12 Jackrabbits. DSU had a 2-0 lead in the game, when Trojan Santino Clay scored a layup. SDSU's first made bucket was 1:30 into the game. "They're a good shooting team, and they're going to win a lot of basketball games," said Garner. "We did a better job of putting the ball on the floor in the second half." DSU, which had no free throw attempts in the first half, went 18-of-27 from the free throw line. They had five more free throw attempts than SDSU (22). "We talked at the half about being more aggressive, and I really thought we responded well to their style of play in the second half," said Garner. White ended the game with five points and two rebounds. Garrett Callahan had 13 points to lead the Jacks. Clay had 12 points on 4-for-6 shooting from the field and was 4-for-5 from the free throw line. DSU's next game will be on Friday when they host No. 4 Dakota Wesleyan at the DSU Fieldhouse at 7 p.m. That game will be one of four games of the Ed Harter Classic, which concludes Saturday night.
