Lady T's upset nationally ranked USF Cougars
By ARIY-EL BOYNTON, Sports Editor 11/04/2009
Second-year Dakota State University women's basketball coach Joe Reints saw his players upset No. 14 Northwestern College (Iowa) last October in the DSU Fieldhouse.

DSU went on to lose five consecutive games after that upset.

So far this season, DSU is 2-0 and owns a victory over No. 15 University of Sioux Falls. DSU beat the Cougars 67-48 on Tuesday at the Fieldhouse. USF is now 0-1.

Reints was happy with this week's win.

"It's a big victory. Any time you can beat a ranked team in the nation, it's an achievement," said Reints. "But it's early and there's a lot of work to be done."

The Cougars shot 34.5 percent from the field and 22.2 percent from the 3-point arc.

"They missed a ton of shots, and I'm not sure how many they'll miss when we play them next. We capitalized, and we'll take any victory we can get," said Reints.

DSU also beat Peru State 83-77 on Friday in Nebraska.

"Being 2-0 is something every team wants to accomplish. We'll enjoy the win tonight and move on," said Reints.

DSU limited USF to seven offensive rebounds and had a 42-27 board advantage over the Cougars.

"I think rebounding was the biggest difference in the game. It sure did a lot to decide the outcome. When we can grab 32 defensive rebounds and hold them to just one shot on their side, we are going to do fairly well in the future," said Reints.

The South Dakota State University graduate, who won a national championship at Lambuth University (Tenn.) in 2007, said that this is no time for his team to read their press clippings.

"We could have done plenty of things better," Reints said. "We weren't perfect, but we're never going to be. We will appreciate the victory, but it's also important to be humble. We need to get better and then take on a tough Briar Cliff team."

The Lady T's will travel to Sioux City, Iowa, this weekend to play Briar Cliff at 5 p.m. on Friday and Hastings College at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Reints, who is also an assistant to the athletic director, is pleased with the success that DSU athletics has seen recently.

"It's been a good week, and it's nice for the community to talk about wins, with the football team getting a big win and the men's (basketball) winning their first game. Wins are good for the DSU product as a whole," said Reints. "It's a feather in our cap and it feels good to think about. These are positives that all of the athletic department can use to give DSU a good name."
