Trojans go 1-1 in weekend play
By ARIY-EL BOYNTON, Sports Editor 10/20/2009
The Jamestown Jimmies broke Dakota State's two-match winning streak on Friday in three sets. The DSU Trojans then got back to their winning ways on Saturday when they beat Valley City State in four sets.

At the DSU Fieldhouse on Friday, Jamestown won 23-25, 21-25, 22-25. DSU beat the Vikings 25-18, 25-22, 18-25, 25-23 on Saturday.

With their weekend split, the Trojans are now 8-13 overall and 3-6 in the Dakota Athletic Conference.

Although DSU suffered an earlier loss to Jamestown, who has yet to lose in the DAC through nine matches, the Trojans competed better in Friday's match against the Jimmies. (On Sept. 19, the Trojans played in a hostile N.D. gym and scored just 12 points in two sets and 15 points in the third.)

After the Jamestown match, DSU Coach Amy Veenhof said that she thought Jamestown Coach Jon Hegerle was surprised with her team's play, scoring more than 20 points in all three sets.

"Jamestown is a good team, but we did compete with them, and we really came close to a couple of set victories. We played hard and were leading at times, but we let them back in it," said Veenhof. "He (Hegerle) was taken back a little bit and told me `good job'."

DSU could face Jamestown for a third time in the DAC championships starting on Nov. 7. Veenhof said that Jamestown is beatable but also extremely talented.

Rachael Jensen had 15 kills and posted a .467 killing rate for DSU. Margie Anthony added 11 kills and Mollie Merriam recorded 25 set assists.

Jensen had 13 digs and Stephanie Kruggel added 10 digs for the Trojans' defense. Vicki Kaul had 2.5 blocks.

    Valley City State

DSU got revenge from their Sept. 18, five-set loss in North Dakota which was largely due to an unsuccessful serve/receive. DSU gave up 17 aces to the Vikings.

On Saturday, DSU gave up four aces and benefited from 12 serving errors.

"Our serve/receive was huge. Not giving up cheap points and making them earn it put the pressure on them, and we took advantage," said Veenhof. "Valley City State is a very aggressive team, and they're right up there in the conference with their serving.

``We passed the ball well against them."

DSU will face Minot State and Dickinson State in North Dakota on Friday and Saturday in two conference matches. The Trojans are currently tied for fifth in the conference.

"We have a couple tough matches and will have to travel a long distance. Minot will be at home and Dickinson will be a hard team, no doubt. We got two matches that won't be given to us; we'll have to earn it," said Veenhof. "We're playing well and with playoffs approaching, that's a good thing."

The Trojans' next home match is on Oct. 27 for their Dig Pink Night against the University of Sioux Falls.
