The Madison fastpitch softball team went 1-2 at the state softball tournament on Oct. 3-4 in Sioux Falls. The Lady Bulldogs started the tournament with a 12-1 victory over Harrisburg. Tri-Valley beat Madison 3-1 and Mitchell got the best of Madison 4-2 on Oct. 4.
Logan Johnson was the winning pitcher in the Harrisburg game, giving up just one hit the entire game. She also struck out four batters.
Johnson also led Madison at the plate with three singles and a walk. She scored the four times she got on base. Kara Seitz had three singles and Nikki Seitz had three RBIs and a single. Katie Lindsay, Paige Hemmer, Chloe Nordling and Hailey Wire all scored runs. Ashley Currey had a RBI via a base on balls.
Breana VanDyke had a single, a double with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Tri-Valley game
While VanDyke suffered the loss for Madison, she struck out four batters while giving up six hits. Nikki Seitz drove in the lone run for MHS with a single in the sixth inning.
"Had time not expired on the team, they had the momentum going to score more runs," said Dawn Wiebers, Madison coach.
Kara Seitz had two singles; Hemmer and VanDyke each added a single.
Mitchell game
In cold conditions, Madison got out to a fast start by scoring two runs in the first inning when Johnson and Seitz both reached base on singles.
"Currey then hit a big double to center field, scoring both teammates," said Wiebers. "Mitchell, in the bottom of the first, had some timely hits and scrapped back to put four runs on the board."
In the third inning, Johnson scored via a Currey RBI sacrifice fly into left field.
It wasn't enough as Mitchell took the game after time had expired.
"The team ended their fantastic season with a 4-2 loss to Mitchell," said Wiebers.
Postseason awards
Johnson and Nikki Seitz were named to the South Dakota High School A All-State Team. Lindsay and Hemmer were honorable mention honorees.
"Congratulations, players, for your outstanding efforts and commitment to Lady Bulldog softball," said Wiebers.
