Area volleyball squads to host Dig Pink Night
By ARIY-EL BOYNTON, Sports Editor 10/05/2009
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and local volleyball teams are sporting pink to raise awareness of the cause that affects thousands of lives every year.

Schools are teaming up with Dig Pink, an organization which features 706 college and high schools aiming to raise $1 million in 2009.

Chester Area, Colman-Egan and Madison are asking fans to wear pink to their matches this week to raise awareness of breast cancer. Dakota State University will host its own Dig Pink night on Oct. 27.

All teams will wear some amount of pink and some matches will use pink volleyballs.

For coach Bethann Entringer of Colman-Egan, Tuesday's match against Flandreau will be a special occasion.

Entringer has been fully aware of what breast cancer is for most of her life.

"The night is personal to me because my grandma (Charlotte Bothwell) is a breast cancer survivor and has been cancer-free for 22 1/2 years," Entringer said. "I've heard a lot of stories and she still comes to all of my games. She is a source of strength for me."

Gina Fritz, a player for Colman-Egan, said she will enjoy the opportunity to play in front of a supportive group full of pink gear.

"That will be nice. There are so many people in the world affected by it, so I'm glad we can do our part to raise awareness," she said.

The Lady Hawks will include the fans in their awareness/fund-raising match that starts at 7:30 p.m. in Colman.

"This year we are having local sponsors sponsoring the night by paying certain amounts of money for digs, aces, kills and blocks that will be donated to the Breast Cancer Foundation," said Entringer. "One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. That means a few girls sitting on our bench could or someone they know could be diagnosed.

``Every fan that wears pink will receive free popcorn from the concessions stand and each fan will receive a breast cancer ribbon."

Making donations to the Colman-Egan volleyball team are Tim's Repair, Jim Clark Construction, Groos Construction, T & R Electric, T& R Service, Sioux Valley, Energy Landis, Ag Praire Junction Crossroads, Sunshine Preschool-Sandy Entringer, 34 Stop, Dells Bowl-Larry and Kristi Shulte and Mid-States Glass-Jeff and Cori Ross.

Madison will host Dig Pink Night on Monday (tonight) when they play Hamlin. Chester Area will host Garretson on Tuesday.

Aside from Dig Pink Night, all concessions proceeds from Chester Area's match will go toward Honor Flights for World War II veterans.

All matches will start at 7:30 p.m.
