DSU loses match to Dakota Wesleyan
By ARIY-EL BOYNTON, Sports Editor 10/01/2009
Dakota State University volleyball coach Amy Veenhof is happy that her team will be able to play Dakota Wesleyan University again on Oct. 13.

The first time didn't go so well. The Tigers of DWU beat DSU 3-1 (25-16, 25-18, 15-25, 25-20) at the DSU Fieldhouse on Tuesday.

"I thought we played poorly as a team. We did not pass or serve well," said Veenhof. "We need to improve our communication on the court and we need to be more aggressive. Too many balls dropped because we were not talking and not being aggressive. I'm glad that we have DWU on our schedule again because I know that we can compete with them."

Rachael Jensen posted a double-double with 14 kills and 14 digs for DSU. Stephanie Kruggel added 16 digs and 14 kills for another double-double.

Ashley Schulte had nine kills, Margie Anthony eight kills and Vicki Kaul seven for DSU. Amy Pheneger contributed 19 digs and Mollie Merriam had 40 assists.

The Tigers were led by Ashley Kley, who had 16 kills and 18 digs. Jayna Morrill added 10 kills with a .500 hitting percentage.

DSU will face the South Dakota School of Mines on Friday in Rapid City at 7 p.m.

"I would like more leadership out on the court from our seniors. The girls need to have higher expectations of each other," said Veenhof.
