Chris Waba named as South All-Star wrestling coach
By ZACH ANDERSON, Daily Leader News Intern 07/24/2009
Madison High School's head wrestling coach will be working with the state's best all-star wrestlers next week. Chris Waba was recently named as head of the South All-Star wrestling team by the South Dakota High School Coaches' Association.

Waba will lead a group of graduating wrestlers on Tuesday as part of the South Dakota All-Star Games in Aberdeen. Being named to an All-Star team is an honor for the athletes, and Waba said that being named to coach one of the teams is just as big an honor.

"It is an honor to be selected by the South Dakota Coaches' Association to coach," Waba said.

Waba coached in the All-Star Games last year as an assistant.

"It went well. The South won last year; I think it was by three points total," Waba said. "It was a lot of fun."

Wrestlers will meet in Aberdeen starting on Sunday. Waba said that while he is technically the coach of the South All-Stars, geography plays very little in how the teams are drawn.

Waba said that seniors send in their information, which is then compiled and on Sunday they are split up so that there are the same number of wrestlers on each team. The wrestlers are not divided by location.

The duel between the North All-Stars and South All-Stars will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Barnett Center at Northern State University.

"It should be a good time," Waba said. "I look forward to going up there and spending time with the athletes."
