Trojans do well in track invitational
By ARIY-EL BOYNTON, Sports Editor 03/30/2009
Even after the competition at the Trojan Invitational, Dakota State University jumper Eric Bauder wanted more. His 6-foot, 9.25-inch high jump not only broke the meet record but also qualified him for national competition.

Bauder was one of more than 30 DSU athletes to take part in the first outdoor meet on Saturday at Trojan Field.

Other teams participating were Morningside College, Dordt College, Jamestown College, Northwestern College and South Dakota State University. No team scores were kept.

The Trojans placed first in six events in both men's and women's competition: Men's 5,000-meter run, men's 3,000 steeplechase, men's high jump, men's triple jump, men's 800-meter dash and men's 1,500-meter run.

DSU placed second in the women's 100-meter dash and the men's 800-meter dash and was third in seven events: men's 4x400-meter relay, women's 200-meter dash, women's triple jump, women's 4x100-meter dash, women's high jump, men's 800-meter run and women's 800-meter run.

The brisk afternoon forced Bauder to put on his warmups after each jump, but after his fellow high jumpers failed to make 6 feet, 3.25 inches, he could have quit and been in first place. But he didn't. He set the NAIA provisional mark and then an automatic mark which will send him to Edwardsville, Ill., for the NAIA championships. Bauder was a half-inch from tying the school record which was set by both Doug Vlasman in 1983 and Terry Fischer in 1976.

A double winner for DSU was Tyler Van Peursem, who won both the 800 (1:58.49) and the 1,500 (4:04.75). Devon Berkness won the 5,000 (16:06.88) and Matt Fideler won the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:57.78) to give the Trojans a sweep in the distance events.

Fideler won the steeplechase in dramatic fashion, passing his lone foe in the last 40 meters to win by less than a second.

Fideler also placed third in the 800 (1:59.89).
