Phillip Downs goes for NCAA title in Houston
By ARIY-EL BOYNTON, Staff Reporter 03/13/2009
Former Bulldog wrestler Phillip Downs will try to earn the title of an All-American this weekend at the NCAA Division II Wrestling championships in Houston, Texas.

Downs, a junior at Northern State University and a 2005 graduate of Madison High School, placed fourth in the 157-lb. weight class at the NCAA Super Regionals on March 1 to qualify for the nationals.

At the Super Regionals in Marshall, Minn., Downs went 2-2 in in the regular session. He then had one last match to decide whether he would go home or go on to nationals.

He beat Brett Hakeman of Upper Iowa 3-2, and now he has a chance to achieve his goal.

"Going into nationals, you must only have one goal: All-American," said Downs. "There was a match this year against supposedly a really good kid in our region. When I wrestled him, although I came up shorthanded, I knew that I had a really good shot."
