The Revs. Sandy Larson and George Furniss look forward to First Presbyterian Church in Madison hosting a Make-it-Yourself Christmas Workshop this weekend.
Adults and children are invited to the workshop on Saturday from 1-4 p.m. and Sunday starting at 11 a.m. at the church. It is free and open to the public.
Participants can make gifts, ornaments, decorations and cards by sewing, embroidery, etc. Hammer and nails projects, crafts made from food and paper quilling are also included. All levels of difficulty and helpers will be available.
Supplies will be provided. Most craft items are made with donated items and little cost. There will be a charge for making a tinsel garland cone-shaped Christmas tree.
Larson said that the congregation wants to help people make homemade Christmas gifts, rather than impersonal and expensive items from a store.
Parents or grandparents are invited; children must be accompanied by an adult.
Larson said she remembers that her most meaningful Christmas giving experiences have been those when people give gifts or cards made themselves. For years, she has hosted a men's and women's Make-Cookies-and-Candy Christmas party.
"What is great about is it is that we get to give from our own hands, be creative (a rare treat for most of us), and have lots of fun doing it," she said. "The Make-It-Yourself-Workshop will be similar to that."
2010 "God's Creation" wall calendars and Fair Trade coffee will be available for purchase. A recipe tree and the Presbyterian Cookbook will also be available.
