Dakota State University students will present the familiar Christmas story about a boy's quest for a BB gun.
"A Christmas Story" will be presented Dec. 3-5 at 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 6 at 1:30 p.m. in the Dakota Prairie Playhouse.
Directed by Kelly MacLeod, this local production presents a familiar holiday story on stage that is similar to the 1983 film.
The story centers around Ralphie's memories of one specific Christmas when the one thing he wants is a Red Rider BB gun. At every turn, however, he finds naysayers who don't think it's a good idea because he might shoot out his eye.
MacLeod said that she would typically discourage her students from watching a movie that is based on the production. In this case, however, the students are already familiar with the plot, which has added to the excitement about the production, she said.
"The script itself is very similar to the movie," MacLeod said, indicating that the cast has incorporated some exaggerations.
The cast, comprised entirely of DSU students, includes Dylon Kiley as Raphie; Katie Jones as mother; Adam Wells as old man/father; Jordan Hamm as Randy; Andy Stangohr as Flick; Bryan Bush as Schwartz; Jamie Grimes as Sckut Farkas; Martha Nagy as Toady; Donna Rice as Esther Jane; Molly Miller as Helen; Britney Timm as Miss Shields; Ryan Peter as Red Rider; Jordan Schuh as elf; and Justin Blessenger as narrator.
Hamm is also set designer. MacLeod said that set building will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. Volunteer builders are welcome. The theater department is also looking for a refrigerator from 1938-40 which can be used in this production.
Tickets are available by calling 256-5666. Prices are $7 for adults and $3 for ages 12 and younger.
