Scrubs Camps give students opportunity to explore health care careers

After a second successful year, Scrubs Camps will once again be held throughout South Dakota this fall. Designed by a team of educators and health care professionals, the one-day camps provide high school students with a glimpse of the vast career opportunities in the health care field.

"This is an experience they can't get in a classroom," said Shelby Frame, a career cluster specialist with the South Dakota Department of Education. "After attending a camp, students will come away knowing if a health care career is really for them, and they might also have a better idea of which direction they would like to go in health care, and what courses to take to help get them there."

Health care is a rapidly expanding field, as new medical technologies are being perfected and America addresses the needs of an aging population. Between the years 2006 and 2016, there is a projected increase of more than 25 percent in the amount of healthcare workers needed in South Dakota.

Nine different Scrubs Camps have been planned for this fall, with the first one being held Oct. 10 in Spearfish.

The others are:

Oct. 13, Rapid City

Oct. 15, Pierre

Oct. 20, Sioux Falls

Oct. 21, Mobridge

Oct. 29, Watertown

Nov. 6, Madison

Nov. 11, Vermillion

Nov. 18, Mitchell
