Wind energy workshop set for area farmers
By Staff 09/21/2009
An informational workshop on "Wind Energy and Your Farm" will be held at Nicky's in Madison on Sept. 29 from 5:30-8 p.m. The goal is to provide area farm businesses with information on the opportunities and challenges encountered with both large-scale and farm-scale wind turbine installations on their farms.

Workshop speakers will be Jeff Rud of East River Electric; Steve Wegman, S.D. Wind Energy Association; and Mike Twedt, South Dakota State University, Wind Application Center.

The panel will also include Bob Sahr, attorney and former PUC commissioner.

The workshop will close with the opportunity for farmers to ask questions.

The issues discussed will focus on the impact of wind development on eastern South Dakota farms.

Rud will provide information on the current and future projections of energy sources for rural electric cooperatives, how installed wind energy projects are performing on South Dakota farms, and how to work with rural electric cooperatives on energy efficiency and renewable energy farm projects.

Wegman will discuss large-scale wind development impacts on farms, and how to make large-scale wind work for you. Wegman is a top expert on land leases for wind turbines, how and why farmers establish wind associations, and the development of large-scale wind projects in South Dakota.

Twedt and graduate students from the SDSU Wind Application Center will provide information on how much energy farm activities use based on past farm energy audits, the feasibility of a small-scale turbine on your farm, and the incentive programs (taxes, grants) available to support farm energy projects.

The workshop will offer a speaker panel for attendees' questions following the presentations, and Sahr will participate in the panel to provide legal expertise on questions related to wind development.

The evening begins with a sandwich and salad buffet dinner for $5 per person. An RSVP is requested by those planning to attend; however, walk-ins are welcome and can pay at the door. To RSVP or secure more workshop information, call 256-2571 or e-mail michelle.goodale@sd.nacdnet.net.
