Whether or not anyone has ever served in the United States military, just think of all of the time we waste nearly every day daydreaming, sleeping, watching television and especially wasting our hard-earned money on the stupidest things that we don't need anyway.

At the same time, how long do you think it takes to drop a very nice letter to a special friend who might be having a very rough time right now? It does not take [more than] a good 15-20 minutes to put a letter together that the underprivileged person in question would get a real charge out of. What I am really trying to say here is to send letters, cards, etc., to the soldiers of the 1-128th Infantry Battalion, who were recently deployed to the Middle East for their second, long tour of duty-oftentimes under hot, uncomfortable and dangerous conditions. When the 1-128th was first activated on Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, due to a hardship issue in my immediate family because my mother, Carol Wing, of Menomonie, was dying of emphysema, I couldn't deploy with the Rice Lake Army National Guard on Father's Day, June 20, 2005. My mother died Monday, Oct. 1, 2007, at age 74. Soon after Rice Lake deployed, I drove up to Shell Lake, and for only $26 a year, bought a subscription to their town paper. Early every Friday morning, I mailed it first class from the Rice Lake Post Office to Sgt. David Wilson. Every week, I also sent letters to him, Sgt. 1st Class Charles Anderson and our 1st Sgt. David Malsom. After their return on Oct. 29, 2005, they informed me-to the best of their knowledge-they had received everything I ever sent them. It is my hope and prayer that everyone reads this letter and sends cards, letters, the town paper-whatever the soldier needs or asks his relatives and friends for. They are all over 10,000 miles from home fighting for our rights and freedoms that keep us all safe and sound each day. I spent 15 weeks between January and April 1991 in Saudi Arabia and did not receive any mail for a long time. Don't you think our soldiers need the best?
